There’s a new Rumson police officer in town.
Her name is Dawn Shields and she is officially the newest member of the Rumson Police Department, the department announced in a social media post. Shields is a Special Law Enforcement Officer Class II. Special II officers are auxiliary, part-time officers who have basically the same authorizations as a permanent officer in a department. They are authorized to carry a weapon and have the power to make arrests and other functions similar to those of a full-time officer.
She comes to Rumson after retirement from a 26-year career with the Red Bank Police Department, the post said. Shields, in her tenure as a Red Bank officer, was a “School Resource Officer and D.A.R.E/L.E.A.D. instructor,” it added.
She will be doing more of the same in Rumson schools.
“We are happy that Dawn can now share her knowledge and experience in Rumson while protecting our schools,” the post concluded. “Welcome S/O III Shields!!”

Hey, batter, batter! Choose a bat, any bat. Get up to bat! Get in the dugout?

Spring. It’s been long-awaited and it’s here. With it come signs of hope, growth, rebirth and fertility that was stifled by winter’s frozen grip. Stagnated.
Buds are beginning to bloom in sparse trees along the riverscape. Garden perennials are popping up with the sun. Bulbs about to pop with life are peering through remnants of the dead of winter. Abandoned laid eggs lie still in a half-made shriveled flower pot nest that a mourning dove ironically cast aside on the last cold day.
All comes back … to grow. To bring life and warmth back to the sparse riverscape, the yard, the flower pot nesting spot.
Sun up, signs of spring out. Take notice and soak it all up with the sun. Hope is here.
Take a look at our snapshots of little signs of spring above and take it all in.
**And don’t forget to click on one image in the gallery to enlarge and scroll! Enjoy!**
Interesting tidbit: Did you know that mourning doves have a habit of being terrible nest makers, but fabulous parents? True story. Ironic.

It’s not every day that you ask for selfies of post-Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade fun and get one single solitary photo and it’s replete with a couple of former Fair Haven councilwomen.
Sad as that is, just add a Fair Haven Fire Department affiliation or two and a Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School Performing Arts Society parent and you get a good mix for a great time at Columbus Club’s Sunday St. Pat’s fete. Now that’s a recipe for Fair Haven fun. That’s the idea.
The two former councilwomen are, of course, Susan Sorensen and Jacquie Rice. We spy at least two fire company relations: Wendy Kane and former chief, Wade Davis. And the selfie-taker, well, that’s none other than RFH PAS parent extraordinaire, Joanne Formisano.
Now, who’s cut off here — in the pic, that is? The masks are dropped and close encounters are close once again. The parade passed by thousands and the Columbus Club party was packed, so we see and heard.
Now, how would you caption this official(ish) photo? The fun started on Sunday. Look out for more fun times among green attire and beer spied this week, for St. Pat’s sake! Yours? Send your best St. Pat’s inspired selfies to [email protected].
Thanks to Joanne Formisano for this selfie gem!
