Saying Goodbye to Longtime Fair Haven Teacher, ‘Jeannie’ Burgess, Mrs. B.

Students called her Mrs. B. She was Jeannie to fellow teachers. She was Jean Burgess — Nellie Jean (Badida) Burgess. She taught in the Fair Haven schools for 33 years. The valued longtime Fair Haven wife, mom, teacher, colleague and friend to many passed away peacefully on Jan. 28 in Chester, VA. She was 73.

Former longtime Little Silver resident and Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High (RFH) School Class of 1952 graduate Phyllis Ann Darragh passed away on Feb. 10 at her son’s home in Windham, NH. She was 87.

In Memoriam: Fair Haven-Born Rumsonite, USMC Vet, George Cuje Jr., 90

Longtime Rumsonite George Cuje Jr. passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on Wednesday, Feb. 10. He was 90.

“There are certain people that are extra special … they make you laugh, share a story, make you feel loved … they live life to the fullest and you wish they can live forever … I know you are having a good laugh in heaven right now with our family that got there first!”

Born in Fair Haven, to his parents George and Leola, George was raised in Red Bank along with his sisters Sissy, Evelyn and Marjorie, and brothers Sonny, Leonard, Robert, Walter and James. He married the love of his life Mary Elizabeth Friscia of Rumson on July 18, 1953, and they moved to Rumson shortly thereafter.

George served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was in the 2nd Motor Transport Battalion, 2nd Marine Division and was Honorably Discharged at the rank of Sergeant Feb. 18, 1954. He served his term alongside his childhood buddies William Thorpe and James Braney, hence, sharing many worldly adventure stories with friends and family.

After his service with USMC, George owned and operated a successful landscaping business, which included the employ of his sons and many of their friends from town. Eventually all who knew and respected him knew him as “Poppa Cuj”. “C’mon let’s go!” became his adage, which amused everyone. Dedication to his family was never ending. We’ll always remember the ski excursions with him and mom during his winter hiatus. The memory of his laughter at family gatherings will always be with us. You will be sadly missed “Daddy Dear”!

George was preceded in death by: his mother, Leola; his father, George; his loving wife, Mary; and his sons, James and William.

He is survived by: his daughters, Patti Hensler, of McLeansville, NC, Mary Jane Beaubreault and her husband Michael, of Rumson; sons, Douglas and his wife Judy of Marathon, FL, George III, of Port Monmouth, John and his wife Eileen, of Fair Haven, and David and his wife Claire, of Oceanport; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Feb. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. Following a private service, family and friends are welcome to attend George’s committal service, and wear your best ski outfit, on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Rumson PBA Local 345, PO Box 231, Rumson, NJ 07760 or Rumson First Aid, PO Box 89, Rumson, NJ 07760.

In keeping with the current state mandates regarding COVID-19, face coverings must be worn by all visitors before entering the funeral home and visitors are also asked to observe social distancing. Visitors are asked to greet the family and then exit the funeral home so that others may also visit due to the limited, allowable capacity.

In Memoriam: Longtime Fair Havenite, Joe Carroll

Forever Fair Havenite Joseph Edmund Carroll passed away on Jan. 23.

“There was nothing Joe loved more than his family and Fair Haven.

“He was married to his wife, Mary Patricia, for over 60 years and together they raised one son and three daughters. He was always willing to get involved. Joe was a member of the Fair Haven Fire Department, spent time as a recreation commissioner, and was a long time coach of baseball and CYO basketball. Even when not in an official role, he was often seen umpiring softball games or moving the chains for Pop Warner football. Joe was a proponent of equality in sports well before it was popular. His daughters were among the first to play hardball with the boys instead of softball. He was at every game his children played, always cheering them on.”

Born in Long Branch, Joe was a lifelong resident of Red Bank and Fair Haven. A star athlete in high school, Joe helped Croydon Hall Academy win the state basketball championship, his obituary said.

After graduating, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. After three years of active duty and several years in the reserves, he was honorably discharged and set his sights on Wall Street.

Over his 30-year career, he worked his way from an entry-level page to a member of the New York Stock Exchange, working for the First of Michigan Corporation.

After retiring, he started a second career in an area he loved — the outdoors. Joe was an avid fisherman, duck hunter, and gardener.  He worked for the Monmouth County Parks System into his 80s.

Joe is survived by: his wife Mary Patrica (Eddy); son, Patrick Carroll and wife Eileen; daughters, Sharon Everett and husband Michael, Maura Creekmore and husband Hill, and Megan Haran and husband Richard; and 12 grandchildren.

Joe is predeceased by his parents. Joseph and Florence Carroll (Hanisch).

Remembrance: Fair Havenite, RFH Grad, Musician, Shannon Gilvary; Fundraising for the RFH Band in His Memory

The Rumson-Fair Haven community and beyond is in mourning over the death to COVID-19 of Terence “Shannon” Gilvary, a musician and former longtime Fair Havenite and Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School Class of 1986 graduate. He was 52.
