Yes, we are in the throes of winter and its big chill. After some snow and freeze, the sun came out today and made the cold sting just a little brighter.
With that first little bit of white stuff in a flurry around the Rumson-Fair Haven area, our minds might be transported in time to RFH days when there was a small group of enthusiasts that loved the snow and took to the slopes regularly — the now defunct RFH Ski Club.

Well, after a lot of warnings and prep, the week’s ones played host to the snowstorm that wasn’t. Oh, there was some snow and freeze, but it was no Blizzard of ’96 or ’78. Yes, back in the day, there were plenty of snowstorms that actually snowed Rumson-Fair Haven area folks in and left them to their own devices for resorting to fun in the freezing white stuff.
A smattering of snow and some RFH seniors’ meeting Photos/George Day
Back in the day, some RFH students preferred to literally chill outside the Senior Commons rather than inside.
To them, those cool dudes, it was the perfect setting for a little pow-wow. Maybe the discussion was heated, though, right? Looks like it could have been. It is the season of reorganizations, after all. And with that dusting of snow, what better time than to chill and get that cool dudes’ hierarchy settled. Ahem …

It’s a classic snow story worth repeating …
Our Retro Pic of the Day takes us back to a blizzard that was true to its word.
What was dubbed The Blizzard of ’96 hit the Rumson-Fair Haven area with full force in early January of 1996. This one lived up to its promise to render everyone in the area immobile.
New year, new fire department line officers. That’s how it goes. Since the dawn of Rumson, Fair Haven and all towns’ time, reorganization has been a New Year rite of passage.
When the main Christmas festivities are over and Santa skips town, it’s time for all good RFHers who are on that first college break to reunite and resume the reunion party before their graduation year ends.
Merry Christmas, Rumson and Fair Havenites! Cherish your day, make those memories and hold on tight to them. One day they will be your best Christmas present.
Ca Ching! Santa really knew how to “sleigh” kids in the ’60s! As you wait for the jolly big guy in red to hit that rooftop or shimmy down the chimney, know that he has been known to appear in the most unlikely of places, so keep your eyes peeled … in the grocery store. Yes, the grocery store.
Scary Santa time with Rafer Roberts in 1978 Photo/Kathy Robbins
“Ho no you don’t!”
That’s what little Fair Havenite Rafer Roberts was likely thinking after he was plopped on scary Santa’s lap for a minute of terrifying quality time and pics in 1978.

We’re bringing this scary Santa gem back from the 2018 archives. Originally posted on Dec. 12, 2018, this is the stuff priceless scary Santa pics are made of … This one was from 2010. We wish these older now twins a very happy holiday and thanks for the bowl full of jello belly laugh!
Sometimes you just win a trifecta when asking for a winning photo of children’s miserable experiences on the lap of Ol’ Saint Nick during the holidays.
