Retro RFH Show Time: Oz Wizadry

Show time is tomorrow for the RFH Tower Players’ fall production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow back on the stage at the high school. In honor of opening night curtain and returning to the stage, we offer a look back at a trip down the RFH Yellow Brick Road to Oz and some staged wizardry of the early 1970s at RFH.

I have a feeling we’re not in Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) anymore …

Retro RFH Football Cheer

RFH JV cheerleaders ready and set to cheer at a football game in the 1970s

Football season has arrived with the fall season at RFH. And a real touchdown for football is always the cheerleading squad.

There were the varsity and junior varsity squads. The look was very slightly different from one to the next, yet the sound and spirit was the same — from junior varsity to varsity, decades ago to now.

High. Very high. So, we pay ode to those cheers and leaders of them, from then until now with a look at another squad of the 1970s.

Retro RFH Baseball Tackle Time

In an effort to continue to pay homage to baseball season, these RFH baseball of a more casual kind retro pics, originally posted on April 10, 2019 are being reprised. Have you ever had a tackle strategy like this in your ball game?

Isn’t football the tackle sport? Well, that may be, but by the looks of things in this 1970s home run classic in the outfield, these RFH baseball players paid no mind to standard sports protocol. It was really all about the fun and laughs for them.

Play ball! Well, spring has arrived and RFH Baseball season is set to start soon — on April 9 with a home JV game at Meadow Ridge. Time will tell whether or not vaccines will hit COVID-19 out of the park, but the game is on and the RFH players are set for a home run season.

Oh, the weekend has arrived … and what better way to celebrate than raising a glass to memories of an old toga party.  Remember those?

Retro RFH Rainy Day Lounging

Since rainy days and Tuesdays sometimes get you down, it’s the perfect time to look back again on some upbeat lazy days of lounging at RFH as a junior. So, we reprise this Retro Pic of the Day originally posted in 2018 on, you guessed it, a rainy day …

Out came the sun on Monday. Then came the dank, drizzly rain on Tuesday. Everyone feels it. Even high schoolers. And everyone knows that usually with that dreary weather comes a little bit of an antsy, lackadaisical mood — especially for students cooped up in a high school all day. Yes, when it rains, it tends to pour mischief in the high school halls. Call it a little shut-in sickness.

But, back in the day, there was a remedy for what ailed RFH students when lazy, hazy days drenched with dismal weather set in. That remedy was the artfully 70s-style painted brick-and-pillar Junior Lounge.

Retro RFH Presidents’ Day

Call it an RFH Presidents Day tribute. There have been many — high school class presidents. And each RFH class has had its way of voting for and honoring its presidents.

Retro RFH Foul Weather Funning

The RFH boys of the Class of 1978 lounge and play backgammon Photo/George Day

Snow day, anyone? Really, what’s an RFH student to do when the studying mood hasn’t struck, the weather stinks and a little peppering of now is not quite snow day worthy? Hang out in the Senior Lounge and play backgammon, of course. Or something like that. We stress “something like that.”

Retro RFH Witchy Women’s Ride

Call it Halloween buddy system brooming. Remember the old buddy system? Trick or treating with a buddy to stay safe. Ever apply that theory in high school tricks with the only treat being the friendship and good ride through it all together?

Well, this gruesome twosome of best buds applied the system for some double trouble all in good ghoulish fun. Now that’s a special brand of mischief. You could say they were headed every witch way on this Halloween in the late 1970s, except to class.

The two would be Sue Brower and Bonnie Werner of the RFH Class of ’78.

So the double-dose Retro Pic(s) of the (George) Day feature them at their Halloween best.
