A Mother’s Day Salute to R-FH Area Moms Through the Generations

Reprise! We’ve said it every year; and we’re saying it again this year …

Happy Mother’s Day to Rumson-Fair Haven area moms of the past and present!

You put the coffee on. You called for us when dinner was ready. You held on tight when we needed a hug. You wiped our dirty little faces, sopped up tears and runny noses. You were there, front and center, at many a school open house, game, play, concert and, yes, principal’s office visit.

You welcomed the neighborhood kids as if they were your own. You wrote all those notes to get us out of gym class (because some of us were clods). You shook your heads in disbelief over our antics and yelled our full names like a loving banshee when you were mad. You had our backs. You were just plain there — the unshifting foundation of a community through the years, building a legacy.

Thank you. We remember those who are gone and salute those who carry on …

Retro Knollwood Cool Kids’ Hangout

Get out! That’s what most school kids are likely wishing to do these dank spring days. And get out with the “in” crowd was always the cool thing to do before school back in the 1970s in Fair Haven.

Picture that. A picture is worth a thousand awkwardly cool moments in the memory of a middle school kid.

To a Fair Haven eighth grader of the 1970s, there was nothing cooler than being asked to hang out, before the bell rang, on the side of Knollwood School by the bushes with the clique of the coolest kids.

Weekly Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge Travel Advisory

The weekend’s drenching, flooding rainfall has stopped; and, the halt was just in time to keep Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge replacement activity status quo.

Monmouth County officials have announced that construction work for Monday through Friday will continue at the latest usual hours of 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with the slightest of changes in the travel advisory.

Here’s what’s happening this week …

Construction and delivery vehicles will continue to traverse the area. This means …

  • Temporary delays are possible on any contractor work day as construction and delivery vehicles enter and exit the work areas.

The eastbound sidewalk on the bridge is closed. This means …

  • The sidewalk on the south side of the bridge will be closed until further notice.
  • Sidewalk users should cross at the pedestrian striping at the new island at Old Rumson Road to access the north side (westbound) walkway.

Construction activity is continuing in the Shrewsbury River. This means …

  • Bridge replacement work is ongoing on both sides of the river south of the bridge.
  • The 65-foot navigational channel width is expected to remain in effect until Fall 2023.
  • Please see the Public Notice for information on future changes to channel access.

Focus: Riding with the River Tide

Sometimes it’s just time to ride into the spring sun with the tide — down by the river, of course.

Now’s the time. When isn’t the time right, though? The bright light shows the way to the clarity of it all, though. The sun comes out, the water glistens and calls. The ride has begun. The ride into a tsunami of the simplest best of time-honored times at the Fair Haven Dock.

The dock may have changed over the years since Fair Haven’s existence, but the Navesink River it juts out to still plays the same part, ebbing and flowing with each ride down by its shores. Holding each ride with the times close. A piece of the dock etched indelibly.

The anchor is never lifted on the ride to river times. The moments stay. They will never leave. The sun is always there somewhere, casting its light on them. Always.

Scene Around: Boys of RFH Junior Prom Night

There’s nothing quite like a dapper boys’ line-up on junior prom night.

Saturday night was the night for the stylin’ cool freeze frame of that classic pre-prom moment for Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) juniors. The moment? It was one taken at Rumson Country Club’s Riverhouse. In keeping with prom picture and celebratory precursors to the main event, different groups of friends, dates and even snap-happy, sentimental parents gather at different spots to be posers and get set to prom the night away.
