If you knew Harry like Missy knew Harry, you’d feel compelled to tell his story to people who didn’t know the lifetime Rumsonite and retell it to those who did.

There comes a time when a policeman changes his beat and gets a badge of a different kind to walk, or ride, it.
Rumson Police Sgt. Peter Koenig retired from a 28-year (combined) career with the Rumson and Sea Bright police departments in July. On Aug. 9, Rumson Police Chief Scott Paterson issued Koenig his retirement badge and ID.
With that official off-the-beat gesture, the Rumson Police Department wished “Pete a safe and happy retirement,” the department’s representatives announced on their Facebook page.
Koenig began his career in 1991 with the Sea Bright Police Department. He transferred to Rumson in 1996, where he attained the rank of sergeant in 2005 and completed his tour as an officer of the law this past July.
Congratulations Sgt. Koenig!

We’ve said it before and now we’ll say it again …
It’s summertime and the living is, well, let’s say pretty fishy if you live in the Rumson-Fair Haven area.
In fact, it’s downright status quo when you grow up in the area to do so with some sand between your toes, a fishing pole over your shoulder, a crabbing net and trap and a bucket in which to tote your catch home — even if that catch is a couple of river rocks, some seaweed and a dried out crab shell.
It’s part of the magic of living by the Navesink River — growing up Rumson-Fair Haven style.
It’s a simple concept. And it’s one of those fabulous things in life that’s free. A walk, a view, a little fishing for a great summer day.
So, the Simple Summer feature today is all about fishing for some fun down by the river — honing in on a little spot by and on the Fair Haven Dock.
The catch is a keeper.
Take a look at our slideshow above for the whole picture. (And don’t forget to click on the lower right icon to enlarge!) See you down by the river!
Retro Happy Fair Haven Campers

It’s been a steamy summer. One hot Fair Haven summer event was a short-lived one for this seasonal reason, because it was, let’s say, too hot to handle. That would be the summer campout. It’s been moved to the fall.

It’s not every day that a third-generation Fair Havenite gets sworn into neighboring Rumson’s police department and proposes to his fiancé in Sea Bright. No, just Tuesday.

Summer is in full swing down by the river, heat waves, storms and all! And a big part of summering in the Rumson-Fair Haven area is all about hanging out down by the river — on the dock, on a little strip of sand, or sailing away with your River Rats.

UPDATE: Since this afternoon, Tavolo in Fair Haven had its electricity restored and was up and running for business. Those without power are still invited to charge devices and peruse Wifi there.
Many homes in Fair Haven are still without electricity. Borough officials have announced that residents are welcome to go to the library to cool off and/or charge electronics. Keep checking Facebook posts by officials.
Rumson police have asked that people keep JCP&L apprised of continuing outages and NOT to call police headquarters or borough hall to report them or ask for updates on electricity restoration.
This afternoon, police said that 500 households in Rumson were without power. First Energy Partners’ trucks will be arriving from PA and OH to assist in restoration with JCP&L.
“The current priority is to be sure that the Borough is safe and that the wires that are down are not powered,” police said. “We will post additional information on Rumson Police Dept’s Facebook page and on our website, as we receive it. You can also follow JCPL’s Outage Map on their website. http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/nj.html“
With JCP&L reporting more than 100,000 customers in Monmouth County waking up in the dark and to carnage of what looked like a demonic twister, but was a brief wind and rain storm blast, Rumson-Fair Haven area people are still reporting outages.

The summer weather has gone from steamy and stormy lately. When the sun’s been out, it’s been prime time to dive in and cool off. In fact, the water has been the only cool place to be outdoors. Beached. Pooled. Diving in. That’s been the idea.
