It’s National Police Week.

With that, the Retro Pic of the Day honors the Rumson Police Department with a glimpse of its officers of the past, courtesy of a photo from the Rumson PD Facebook page.

Whatever year it was, it looks as though there were eight officers in the department then.

Our guess, considering the uniforms, that Perri Eli was chief at the time.

The photo features: Henry Kruse, James Wallace, David Kenney, Edmond Desmond, Perri Eli, John Connett, Seth Johnson and William Zerr.

Do you know who the juvenile officer was at the time? Ranks? Who was your favorite old time police officer from when you were growing up?

Have you thanked a police officer today?

In recognition of National Police Week, we are reposting this Retro Pic of the Day of Fair Haven police …

With National Police Week coming to a close, it’s only fitting that we take a look back at the Fair Haven Police Department. This look goes back to 2001. It features some officers who have since retired, some who have moved on and some who have passed.

It’s National Police Week. And it’s a National Police Week of a different kind this year.

Usually the week represents the culmination of the Police Unity Tour in which law enforcement officers from all over the nation ride bicycles to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. to honor fallen officers. But, for the first time since before it began in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, there is no ride due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is also no week of convergence in Washington to participate in the now longtime tradition of participation in events to honor fallen officers. But there is still remembrance.

With the news that recently retired Fair Haven Police Chief Darryl Breckenridge was appointed director of the Monmouth County Police Academy, thoughts of past teaching moments by mentors came to mind.

First, the Retro Pic of the Day honored Breckenridge’s mentor, Chief Carl Jakubecy on National Police Week.

That ode is followed by a look back at Breckenridge before he became chief with fellow colleagues in 2001.

Several of the officers in this photo have since retired, including former Chief Rick Towler, Captain Paul McCue, Lt. Bill Heath and … who else?

Recognize anyone in this photo. Who was a former juvenile officer and president of the Monmouth County Juvenile Officers’ Association. Do you know what rank Breckenridge had in 2001?

Have you thanked a police officer today?

The news of former Fair Haven Police Chief Darryl Breckenridge’s appointment as the new director of the Monmouth County Police Academy prompted thoughts of the man he says in one moment, with one gesture became his mentor and motivated him to live his dream of being a police officer in his hometown — Chief Carl Jakubecy.
