Simple Summer: Fishin’ for Some Crabby Dock Time

What a catch! It doesn’t get more simple or summery than crabbing and fishing on the Fair Haven Dock. It’s a time-honored tradition.

New restrictions? Not a 10-gallon cooler in sight. No mattresses. No fires. Nothing but a few fishermen and their bait, poles, traps and some good simple summer times down by the river. It’s how it’s always been on the dock on any given simple summer day to remember.

What was dubbed an unprecedented “slap in the face” turned into some verbal fisticuffs when a tsunami of riled residents at Monday’s Fair Haven Borough Council meeting turned out to turn the tide of borough business by defending that volunteer — fourth-generation Fair Havenite and boat captain, Brian Rice. It became a full wipe-out when the ousting became official with a contentious undertow of a 3-2 vote with one abstention.

Focus: Gone Fishing in Fall

It’s not a typical time of the year for fishing off the end of the Fair Haven Dock. Yet, Wednesday wasn’t a typical fall day, either.

Call it nature’s little overpour of summer. And no one was in a hurry to clean up the spill into the cooler season. The sun was bright, the leaves were turning and falling, and the Navesink River was beckoning the warmth and reflection of the sun and the solace of some lone fishing.
