River Water Quality, Fishing, Waterborne Recreation Alert

From Captain Brian Rice, Navesink River Municipalities Committee chairman, native Fair Havenite …

I am writing to inform you of a critical situation that has arisen at the Red Bank construction site located at the intersection of Oakland and Maple Avenue. During the construction activities, the main sewer line was broken, resulting in a significant sewage leakage.

Currently, it is estimated that approximately 100 gallons of wastewater per minute is being discharged into the storm water system, which ultimately flows into the river. Efforts are underway to contain the spill by removing the contaminated water and dumping it into trucks. However, the duration required to fully contain and resolve this issue remains uncertain.

As a precautionary measure, we strongly advise all residents and visitors to refrain from engaging in any river sports or consuming any shellfish or finfish from the affected river until further notice. This advisory is issued to ensure the safety and health of the community.

The DEP will be releasing an official statement shortly to provide further details and updates on the situation.

This is a breaking news matter. Updates will be added when available.
