Scene Around: Marine Research Vessel Dedicated to Memory of Rumson’s Heidi Sculthorpe

Rumsonite Heidi Lynn Sculthorpe was known as a woman who loved the water.

She passed away on April 25, 2008; and her love of all things water-centric, family and friends was something that loved ones noted as everlasting. In fact, her obituary cited that in lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to Monmouth University’s Urban Coast Institute (UCI).

Paddling Out in Remembrance of RFH Grad Bill Caldwell

“Beautiful” was one word used by many to describe the memorial paddle-out off Sandy Hook on Sunday for RFH alum Bill Caldwell —  avid surfer, skateboarder, craftsman and lover of the water and animals who lost his hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer on July 20.

When, exactly, surfers started celebrating the life of their kindred waterborne spirits in this way is unknown. Still, it has become a steadfast tradition — an unspoken promise, a way to honor one another.

Call it a floating memorial honor ceremony. An apt remembrance in the place where the hearts of these souls of the water are thought to rest. Their peaceful eternity. That’s what a paddle-out is. That’s what Bill’s was.

“I’m glad to have taken part … you’ll never be forgotten,” said Caldwell’s RFH Class of ’78 classmate Chris Wood, owner of Woody’s, where one of Bill Caldwell’s surfboards hangs.

“A powerful send off to a great friend, loved and admired by all,” said RFH classmate Peggy Miller. “RIP Bill Caldwell.”

Encapsulated, it was a “beautiful day to pay tribute to a beautiful soul,” another classmate, Ginger White Tassinari said.

Rest in peace, Bill, Billy, Wilbur … You are remembered.

The following is a slideshow in memory of Bill Caldwell through the years …

Focus: Reprise of a Rumson Locals’ Summer Down by the River

Rumor, or a National Weather Service report, has it that the sun will come out tomorrow. And we’re not talking about the old musical Annie. It’s locals’ summer weather wish come true from a good source and the telltale sign of rainbows sightings at dusk.

A Mourning Walk for Maddy Massabni & Many Others

Hundreds walked A Mourning Walk on Sunday to honor their loved ones who have passed. Rumson mom Dawn Tilton Massabni was one of them. So was her son, Georgie and a host of other Team Don’t Shock Me supporters who honored the memory of Maddy Massabni.

Maddy, a Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School graduate, lost her life at 19 to the ramifications of toxic shock syndrome. That was Dawn’s particular cause. There were many messages to be heard in the mourning of the many others as well.

Focus: A 40th RFH Reunion

“Oh, what a night!”

The Four Seasons’ keyboardist Bob Gaudio and future wife Judy Parker may have written the lyrics to the song about the nostalgia of an affair “late December back in ’63,” but the title and chorus are quite fitting for the 40th reunion of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School’s Class of ’78.

Focus: Fair Haven Night Out Fun

Fair Haven police reported that there were an awful lot of community leaders, emergency responders and resident cohorts having a suspicious amount of fun at Tuesday’s National Night Out.

From all accounts and snapshots, the evidence has been mounted for a solid conviction.

Police also reported a sighting of recently injured Patrolman Dwayne Reevey having fun and looking like he’s on the road to strong recovery.

Take a look …
