Yes, we are in the throes of winter and its big chill. After some snow and rain, the sun came out today and made the cold sting just a little brighter.

With that first little bit of white stuff in a flurry around the Rumson-Fair Haven area, our minds might be transported in time to RFH days when there was a small group of enthusiasts that loved the snow and took to the slopes regularly — the now defunct RFH Ski Club.

Well, the forecast is calling for a snow day soon … at the very least in the Rumson-Fair Haven area.

And, back in the 1970s, a snow day was prime time to hit the ski slopes.

So, the Retro Pic of the Day offers a glimpse back to the RFH Ski Club days.

This photo also brings RFHers back to a favorite coach who passed away not too long ago — Hal Lorme.

RIP, Mr. Lorme. Happy ski trails, all RFHers!

Retro RFH Baseball Home Run

It’s not only still baseball season at RFH, it’s Friday the 13th.

So, in the spirit of good luck, the Retro Pic(s) of the Day feature some  successful ball playing of the 1970s with a beloved coach whom many felt charmed the game — Hal Lorme.

Lorme passed away just over a year ago. He is still fondly remembered by many an RFH alumni and ball player.

In the top featured photo, Lorme is seen with ball player Tripp Dupree.

Below, he’s behind and in the scenes coaching. Recognize anyone else?

RIP, Coach Lorme. May the luck of Lorme be with today’s team!

With all the recent talk about skiing champ and RFH senior Alex Perkins claiming the gold at the 2016 NASTAR Eastern Regional Championship for the second consecutive year and heading to compete in the national NASTAR championship round this month, visions of the old RFH Ski Club were conjured up.

Yes, there was an RFH Ski Club, now a Jurassic memory. While there weren’t too many people in the club, it existed. It’s members took trips and, well, skied the winters away in between mods (remember them?) and studies at RFH — sort of.

And the RFH Ski Club was headed by the beloved RFH coach, gym teacher and RFH Athletic and Jersey Shore Sports Hall of Fame inductee Hal Lorme, who passed away just over a year ago.

So, the Retro Pic(s) of the Day honors Lorme and those renegade conquerers of the slopes.

The guys in the top featured shot all still live in the Rumson-Fair Haven area. One is a Rumson dad and couple of the others are well-known businessmen. One actually handled memorial services for Lorme last year.

RIP, Hal Lorme. You are remembered.

Recognize any of these preppy ski attire-donning ladies and dudes?

The R-FH Weekend: Spaghetti Dinner, St. Patrick’s Day Parade & More

The upcoming weekend in the Rumson-Fair Haven area is flush with fun, festivity, remembrance and tradition.

To start, on Saturday  …

• It’s been a longtime tradition of the Fair Haven Volunteer Fire Company — the annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser.

The sauce and meatballs are prepared under the tutelage of 85-year-old Angelo DePonti, a Red Bank friend of Fair Haven who has been a social member of the fire company for 25 years.

“I was born to cook and I love sharing my recipe and food with so many,” Angelo says.

The meal of spaghetti and meatballs, salad Italian bread, soft drinks and homemade desserts is made and served by firemen, Ladies’ Auxiliary members and fire cadets.

The dinner, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the firehouse on River Road,  is BYOB and costs $10 for adults and $5 for children. Oh, and take-out is available.

Mangia!

• Later on Saturday night, as a prelude to Sunday’s Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the parade’s Investiture Cocktail Reception fundraiser from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at The Salt Creek Grille in Rumson.

Tickets are $75. The price includes cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

And on Sunday …

• The third annual Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade marches into town beginning at 1 p.m.

The parade lines up at Victory Park and then proceeds east on River Road for about 1 mile to Piping Rock Park.

Last year, police estimated that there was a crowd of roughly 7,000.

• Also on Sunday, from 3 to 5 p.m. RFHers may pay their respects to former RFH teacher and coach Hal Lorme.

The service is being held from 3 to 5 p.m., with a prayer service at 4:30, at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad Street, Red Bank.
