It was something to cheer about. The RFH Bulldogs won the state football championship recently. Yet, there wasn’t pompom in sight for this Bulldogs cheerleaders’ pic. Not this time, anyway.
Still, it’s a real touchdown when four RFH friends, and cheerleaders of a special kind, reunite to support not only their alma mater in that state championship game at Rutgers, but the son of a Dawg, too.
That son is stand-out RFH football player Carson Memmott. He’s the son of RFH Class of ’78 grad Dave Memmott. Dave, a Fair Haven-raised guy who ended up being a Rumson dad, was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident. And Dave’s friends since RFH days and earlier made sure they were there to cheer their friend’s son on as they watched their alma mater soar to that stellar state championship that hadn’t been achieved since 1959.
This merry band of RFH rah-rah rowdies, including Dave Memmott, have been seen in many a Retro Pic of the Day as those infamous reverse-role RFH cheerleaders ready to cheer on the team in powder puff football. And cheer they did, even if the win came more from the fun they had and laughs they gave spectators. These guys were never too shy to ham it up while putting themselves in someone else’s … kilt.
And, decades later, it’s safe to say that the cheer from these guys still scores the field goal — the one of a legacy of friendship passed on to the next generation.
The RFH ’78 cheerleaders, left to right, are Mike Grady, Doug Borden (another RFH Rumson dad), Chris Wood (owner of Woody’s in Sea Bright) and RFH Class of ’78 President Greg Nowell.
The guys were also championing another win for Carson in asking people to vote for him as the New Jersey Sports Zone’s state Defensive Play of the Year. The votes are in and Carson came in fifth with 239 votes. The first-place winner was Xavier Jackson.
We’re pretty sure this won’t be the last time you’ll see this bunch together in a cheerleading huddle, though.
Cheers to great childhood friends through the ages and RFH Dawgs!

In this retro pic (above) Grady and Borden (in that order) are the two on the left in the bottom row. Dave Memmott is top and center with the hat and sunglasses and directly to his right is Chris Wood. Nowell is MIA in this one.
