Scene Around: A Rumson Officer and a Ride for Those Who Died

It’s National Police Week. And it started on Monday with the end of a long ride for those who died in the Police Unity Tour 2025.

The rain did not rain on this parade of police officers. Rumson Police Sgt. Bryan Dougherty, a Fair Havenite, was among the many who rode the ride on his bicycle with hundreds of others as part of Team Monmouth County.

“On May 9 at 7:30 a.m., Sgt. Bryan Dougherty and hundreds of other police officers rode off in the pouring rain, headed for Washington D.C.. Great job Sarge!”

Those New Jersey officers who rode took the roughly 300-mile trek from various locations around the state starting last Friday to the National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial in Washington, D.C., arriving at 2 p.m. on Monday to kick off National Police Week with a ceremony at the memorial. Some ride bicycles and others ride motorcycles.

“Every year, members of law enforcement, along with survivors of line-of-duty deaths, from across the United States unite for a massive ride that pays tribute to fallen law enforcement heroes,” the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund website says.

Some ride for specific officers who died in the line of duty. Others ride for all.

Sgt. Dougherty is among several Rumson and Fair Haven police officers, current and retired, who have ridden.
