Longtime Rumsonite, Marie Cottrell, passed away peacefully on Dec. 26, “surrounded by her loved ones following a life devoted to her family, friends, and community.” She was 90.
Marie also led the popular Rumson Antiques Show fundraiser for many years. Marie additionally supported the greater community through her volunteer work on the Rumson Historic Preservation Commission and the Monmouth Historical Association Board.
Born in Brownsville, TX, Marie was one of eight children. She married her lifelong partner, James H. Cottrell, in 1954 and followed her husband wherever his work took the family from North Carolina to Louisiana and Alberta, Canada before ultimately settling in Rumson in 1964 near James’ familial roots.
Marie was an active member of Holy Cross Church where she served as a lector, president of the Altar Guild and a member of the long-range planning committee.
Marie is predeceased by her husband of 52 years, James H. Cottrell.
She is survived by: her four children, James H. Cottrell, Jr. (Melissa), of Brunswick, ME, Craig T. Cottrell (Lori), of Glastonbury, CT, Christiane C. McNamara (Doug), of Fair Haven, and Stephen O. Cottrell (Cathy), of Rumson; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A mass of christian burial will be held on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 30 Ward Ave., Rumson, NJ 07760. Interment will be private. A celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Marie to Lunch Break, 121 Dr. James Parker Blvd, Red Bank, NJ 07701.
