In Memoriam: Longtime Area Barber, Red Bank-Raised Sal Izzo, 87

Red Bank-raised longtime Shrewsbury resident and area barber, Salvatore “Sal” Izzo, Jr., passed away Saturday, July 9. He was 87.

Born at his 64 Shrewsbury Avenue home in Red Bank on September 27, 1934 to Salvatore Izzo, Sr. and Christina Buonocore, Sal was raised in Red Bank where he attended River Street School and graduated from Red Bank High School in 1952.

“The day after graduation, Sal went to work for his father at Sal’s Barber Shop in Red Bank. After working for his father for 11 years, he opened up his own business in Middletown and continued cutting and styling men’s hair for over 70 years. He served in the National Guard based at the Red Bank Armory for 8 years.”

Sal is survived by: his loving children, Salvatore Izzo, III and wife Lynda, and Michele Izzo-Campbell and husband Walter; his cherished grandchildren, Krystle and husband Michael, Paige, Nicholas, Teressa-Jo, Gianna and Joseph; his beloved great-grandchildren, Sophia and Mila, and his sister, Anna and husband Louie, brother Anthony and wife Luann; and life partner, Catherine Tahler. 

He is predeceased by his brother, Vincent Izzo of Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Family and friends may visit Thursday, July 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua RC Church in Red Bank on Friday, July 15 at 10 a.m.; and burial will follow at the Presbyterian Church at Shrewsbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Salvatore’s memory to Paralyzed Veterans of America.
