RFHers have fallen into football season with the usual panache. Everything about playing the game has always been done in true pro style — from the players to the cheerleaders.

Though, while cheerleaders are still cheering at RFH, they do so with different outfits and cheer style. And seeing cheerleaders all dressed up like some 1977 guys on the sidelines is something that never happens (or at least like this) anymore.

Yes, it’s the season at RFH when it’s pretty much all about football.

But, what about those days when it was about powder puff football, too?

There were those days — at least in the late 1970s.

So, the Retro Pic of the (George) Day is a throwback to 1977 when the girls in the RFH Class of 1978, the seniors, squared off against the junior girls in the Class of ’77.

Also referred to as flag football, the game, which is conducted as a more fun exercise of competition sans tough tackling, has been a standing tradition at many high schools across the country and in Canada.

The girls played fair and with a bit of a fashion forward flair, to boot.

And the guys, well, they showed up as quite a unique looking cheerleading squad. But, you’ve seen those photos before.

The coaches, on the other hand, had some strange, yet probably ’70s appropriate ideas of football fashion.

Who was that coach? Remember who won? And who is the ref? He was an RFH sports enthusiast and former Rumson and Fair Havenite who is, unfortunately, no longer with us. RIP.

Thanks, once again, to George Day for this classic RFH photo!

The 1977 RFH Powder Puff Football game was a good one that made for some great photo opps.

We saw a glimpse of that scene in the last Retro Pic of the (George) Day.

But, what must be remembered as well is the male cheerleading squad that hip, hip and hurrahed those junior and senior girls to athletic success on the field. It’s a wonder the girls could concentrate on the game with all that adroit beefcake wile calling like Sirens on the sidelines.

The girls played with what looked like a coordinated feminine fashion finesse — coordinated pig tails, pony tails, turtle necks, gloves and bandanas.

Those boys cheering them on, however, had their own feminine mystique in wardrobe going on.

They’ve been seen before, but here’s another (double dose, different angles) glimpse of the boys of the cheering squad clad in girls’ uniforms with their own special fashion plate additions of hotsie totsie work boots and long underwear.

Some of these guys of the RFH Class of ’78 still live in the area. Recognize anyone? One is a former Fair Haven policeman and another is a Rumson dad.

Hip, hip … holy cartwheel!

Thanks, once again, to George Day for providing this classic look into the past!

In keeping with the spirit of the recent Knollwood School Hoops for Hearts tournament in Fair Haven, we decided to bring back a hearty glimpse of some favorite RFH cheerleaders, courtesy of the great photography work of George Day.

No, they were not cheering for a Hoops for Hearts basketball event, but just think what kind of funds they could have raised for such a cause back in the day — by virtue of how they simply wear their uniforms.

They’re running to their main stage in front of the bleachers here for a 1970s RFH Powder Puff Football competition.

I can’t remember, but someone must have missed a pass while getting a gander of this appearance.

These guys are flipping wigs and losing, uh, parts making this run!
