Rumson’s Rose Rimali Dies at 103

Longtime Rumson resident Rose Rimali, a member of the Rumson Senior Citizens and a communicant of Holy Cross Church, passed away on Sept. 6. She was 103.

Known to have had a “full, wonderful life,” Rose is remembered by her loved ones as a “fabulous seamstress and Italian cook who made the best meatballs in the family,” her obituary on the John E. Day Funeral Home website said.

Born in Sicily, Rose came to America at the age of three months. After growing up in New York City, she and her husband Louis moved to the Bronx where they raised their two daughters ran the family business, Crosby Department Store, until retirement, the obituary said.

The Rimalis moved to Morristown in 1974. After her husband died in 1976, Rose moved to Rumson where she lived with her daughter and family until her death.

“She loved sharing her amazing life through the wonderful stories she told about all she had witnessed throughout her 103 years,” her obituary said.

Rose is survived by: her daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Robert Slavin, of Rumson; her daughter, Adele Noonan, of Palm City, FL; four grandchildren: Laura Gambacorto, of Oceanport, Daniel Lynch, of Fair Haven, Donna Rydberg, of Palm City, FL, and Eric Gray, of Port St. Lucie, FL; nine great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. All will miss her dearly.

Visiting hours are set for Thursday, Sept. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Cross RC Church in Rumson on Friday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m.. Entombment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Rose’s memory to the VNA Health Group, 176 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ 07701.
