Word spread quickly among Rumson-Fair Haven area people after a video showing a scuffle and attempted stabbing on Thursday at the upscale Red Horse Restaurant, the former Fromagerie, in Rumson.
A 75-year-old out-of-state restaurant patron was charged with aggravated assault and related charges stemming from the incident.
Rumson police, on Sunday, issued a statement setting the record straight on the incident. On Aug. 22 at approximately 8:30 p.m., patrol officers were dispatched to a local restaurant after receiving a 911 report of a “man that pulled a knife” on another patron.
Patrols responded and took the suspect, David Gulley, 75, of Palm Beach Shores, Florida, into custody after witnessing him strike the manager in the side with a closed fist as they arrived.
Witness statements and cell phone footage of the incident confirmed that Gulley had brandished a steak knife and lunged at the victim after an argument over wine being spilled on the victim’s wife. The victim suffered a lacerated finger and refused medical treatment at the scene.
Gulley was charged with the following offenses by Patrolman James Camilleri and released on a summons:
• Aggravated Assault
• Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose
• Terroristic Threats
• Disorderly Conduct
• Simple Assault
