Meet R-FH Retro’s New Intern

You’ll see him around the towns. Rumson-Fair Haven Retrospect (R-FH Retro) has a new intern and he’s on the Rumson-Fair Haven area beat and ready to help out and get the towns covered a bit more. David is eager to capture hyperlocal news, fun scenes around the towns, a little history and events.

His link to this area, in particular? Well, you may know David’s mom, Sandi Vilacoba. She has some Fair Haven roots and owns and operates The Pilates Project studio in the borough.

David’s dad, Karl Vilacoba, also has a strong journalism background and is currently the communications director for Monmouth University’s Urban Coast Institute.

Some may remember them as reporters for Greater Media Newspapers’ The Independent, The Hub, The Atlanticville back in the beginning of the millennium. Decades later, the nose for news apparently an inherent trait, David Vilacoba has set out to set the record straight on the hyperlocal scene.

Speaking for himself, here’s a blurb from David giving the scoop …

Hi, my name is David Vilacoba, and I’m 15 years old. I’ve lived in Monmouth County my whole life, and I currently reside in West Long Branch. I’m an incoming sophomore at Communications High School in Wall Township and serve as assistant news editor for its school newspaper, the Inkblot.

Some of my interests include politics, literature, history (especially local history), and music. I’ve been interested in journalism since I was in middle school, with both of my parents having been in the industry.

I wholeheartedly believe that journalism should be solely dedicated to the discovery and advancement of the objective truth. I also believe in the importance of local and hyperlocal journalism, which is part of the reason I’m writing for this publication. I am so excited to begin here at Rumson-Fair Haven Retrospect!

And we (all five of me) are thrilled to have you, David!

So, if you see David out and about, please say, “Hello” and offer him a scoop or a scene to write about or photograph.
