In Memoriam: Rumson Resident, Nahabed Charkoudian, 93

In the end he remarked that ‘he had a good run …’ We would say that he ran quite the marathon: 93 years. And we raise a glass of his favorite scotch and say to him, “Well done. you can rest now, Dad.'” ~ family of Nahabed Charkoudian in his obituary

Rumson resident Nahabed Charkoudian, formerly a longtime resident of Springfield, MA, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Jan. 15. He was 93.

“Nahabed was an avid outdoorsman, routinely enjoying skiing, gardening and a good cigar. A nature lover, Nahabed fished, tracked animals in Vermont, hiked and had a phenomenal green thumb — he had an organic garden before it became trendy to do so. He took yard work seriously, ensuring each visitor enjoyed his carefully curated landscape traditionally reserved for five-star resorts. He was also a sports fan of all New England and Massachusetts professional sports teams including the Celtics, Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots. Epic showdowns between Larry Bird and Michael Jordan were his favorite to watch! He loved basketball so much that he spent years as a volunteer referee for high schoolers in Springfield MA.

“Nahabed was an avid reader of books and newspapers.
There wasn’t a day that went by without him reading at least 3 newspapers. In his early years it was the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, the New York Times, and Financial Times followed by the New York Post. He loved a good crossword puzzle and avidly kept track of his stock portfolio. In fact, if he didn’t pursue a career in pharmacy, we think he would have enjoyed a successful career on Wall Street. He loved to travel and explored all corners of the world, even meeting his life partner in Lebanon.

“Most of all, he loved his wife, children, and extended family. Nahabed was proud of the achievements of his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews (he often asked if he could be their “agent”). All he wanted was a better life for the next generation, and he was our champion every step of the way. To be closer to his family and after living in Springfield for much of his life, Nahabed relocated to Rumson in 2018. He understood the importance of family, education, merit, character, and integrity.”
