Former longtime Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) gym teacher and coach and vice principal, Caroll “Lynn” Broten, more recently of Tinton Falls, passed away peacefully at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank of complications due to COPD on Oct. 30. She was 83.

Born in Newark in December of 1943, Lynn’s early years were spent in North Plainfield before her parents moved to Wardell Avenue in Rumson in 1957.

“Lynn graduated from RFH in the Class of 1961, where she was a class officer and an inducted to the Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduation, she completed her bachelor of arts degree in Physical Education and Health at Montclair State College. In 1982, she earned her master of science (MS) degree at Monmouth College where she graduated as an educational supervisor and principal. Lynn joined the RFH staff in 1967, after two years of teaching Physical Education in Ocean Township schools. From 1969 through 2000 she served as an RFH physical education teacher, coach, supervisor and vice principal.

“Lynn also enjoyed her summer months at Seashore Day Camp as counselor and supervisor, Oakhurst Day Camp as counselor, and RFH as a summer school Biology teacher. She also worked at Sea Bright Beach Club teaching swimming and as staff director/assistant manager. After her retirement, she loved being clubhouse manager at Sea Bright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club …

“Her great joys were her home in Highlands, NJ overlooking NYC, Sandy Hook, Sea Bright and the Atlantic Ocean and a special fondness for her penthouse condominium in the town of Atlantis overlooking a lake, a golf course filled with wildlife, and beautiful sunrises in the breakfast room and magnificent sunsets on the west balcony.

“She will be missed by so many friends and family. She never missed, at any time, sending cards for birthdays, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was always thinking of others.”
