The Fair Haven police pursuit of a stolen Bentley driven by two men this morning ended in a cyclist being struck by the stolen car and a getaway.
Police released a statement that said they got a call at 7:35 a.m. reporting an attempted vehicle theft — a white Bentley occupied by two men wearing face coverings. The caller had said the vehicle was last seen on Fair Haven Road. More reports followed, saying that the “suspicious” Bentley had been seen on Allen and Church streets in Fair Haven.
A vehicle matching this description was reported stolen to Rumson police earlier in the morning.
At about 7:45 a.m., a Fair Haven police officer assigned to traffic detail for the River Road paving project, at River and Hance roads, spotted the Bentley on River Road and attempted to confront the driver.
The confrontation attempt was met with the car fleeing, turning onto Hance Road and heading north. There, it struck a cyclist and fled. A Fair Haven police patrol found the car on Lewis Lane and initiated a pursuit, but the vehicle refused to adhere and stop and the pursuit was terminated, according to law.
The pursuit terminated, the Bentley was last seen heading west on Harding Road into Red Bank.
The cyclist, a Fair Haven resident, was treated on the scene by police and Fair Haven First Aid, declining further medical assistance.
The incident remains under investigation and anyone with any information is asked to contact Fair Haven Police Detective Dwayne Reevey at 732-747-0241 x336.
