Tight Fair Haven Council Race Shows Split-Ticket Victory

The unofficial election results are in; and, after what turned out to be a very tight race for two Fair Haven Borough Council seats, it looks like party tickets split, seating one Democrat and one Republican on the governing body dais, unless yet-to-be-counted provisional, mail-in and cure letter ballots change that.

Both newcomers to the race, Democrat Christina Malecki, a 2006 Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) graduate who was raised in the borough was the highest vote-getter with 1,529, or 25.19 percent of the vote. Separated by only eight votes, Republican Kevin Griffin garnered 1,521 votes, or 25.06 percent.

Griffin’s running mate, Joe Duva won 1,513 votes, or 24.93 percent. And Malecki’s running mate, Harold Baker, garnered 1,493, or 24.60 percent.

A total of 6,070 votes were cast. There were 14 write-ins.

The Monmouth County Board of Elections advises on its website that mail-in ballots continue to be counted six days after the polls close, provided the mail-ins are postmarked by or on Election Day.

In a race as tight as this one, those uncounted ballots could change the results, depending on how many were cast in the borough.

R-FH Retro will update the results if changes occur to affect the unofficial outcome.
