Each year, the March 2 birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, a/k/a Dr. Seuss, is remembered throughout the U.S. with the Read Across America program.

Fair Haven’s Viola L. Sickles School officials are claiming major success with the annual PTA Book Fair.
Featuring various genres and titles from Scholastic Publishing, the Book Fair was held from Nov. 14 to 18. Family Night at the fair allows parents and siblings take part. It was held on the evening of Nov. 15 and was dubbed a “door-buster” success.
Many students and families took the opportunity to buy books for use in the classroom as well, using the teachers’ wish lists as a guideline.
This year’s Book Fair at Sickles School was organized by PTA Book Fair Committee members Jen Baron, Vicky Hays, Heather Lombardo, Kerry Maguire, and Sheilah Olson.
The Knollwood School Book Fair is set for April.

You could say a ghoulishly good time was had by all on Halloween in the Fair Haven schools.
The Oct. 31 fun began before the school day ended and trick-or-treating in the neighborhoods began.

Just like reading and writing and ‘rithmetic, the subject of respect is taught at Fair Haven’s Viola L. Sickles School all school year long.
It’s state mandated — at least a week. Dubbed aptly the Week of Respect, Sickles students participated in meaningful activities designed to reinforce lessons about kindness and acceptance.

They hopped onto their bicycles. They boarded the “big red trolley.” Third graders from Fair Haven’s Viola L. Sickles School set out for the school they will attend in the fall as fourth graders — Knollwood. It is a milestone celebrated every year for many years now. It’s Transition Day.
With all the ceremonies of Rumson and Fair Haven students’ transition from third to fourth grade and impending RFH graduation, thoughts reverted to a time when there was no such thing — not that there’s anything wrong with it, though. It’s pretty adorable, really.
No, there really wasn’t a transitional ride or walk from one school in Fair Haven or Rumson to the next. And, in Fair Haven at least, back in the late 1960s and early 70s, students simply went to the school to which they lived closest — until that big ol’ jump to middle school, when everyone in the borough went to Knollwood for seventh and eighth grade. And no one got driven to school. They all walked or rode bikes together.
Oh, and what is now the Viola L. Sickles School was Willow Street School.
So, the Retro Pic of the Day offers a glimpse back to those days when fifth grade was at Sickles (well, Willow Street) and one of the most popular teachers of the era taught there — Mr. DeMarco.
I’m pretty sure that he won several awards in various capacities, not the least of which was some sort of teacher of the year for the state, I believe.
Speaking from experience, he really was a memorable teacher. Very patient. Very kind. Very intelligent. His lessons sunk into our little brains. Thanks, Mr. DeMarco.

Fair Haven students recently took a virtual reality field trip.
They participated in showcase of Google Expeditions. Viola L. Sickles and Knollwood Schools were among the first chosen for beta testing for the virtual trip from a wait list of approximately 6,500 schools.

Reduce, reuse, and recycle.
They’re standard procedures at Viola L. Sickles and Knollwood schools in Fair Haven, but especially so when the students and staff are commemorating Earth Day — the day earmarked to honor the environment.
Fair Haven students were asked to reuse and recycle by donating their used books to the Book Recycling Project at Sickles School and the Student Council Book Drive at Knollwood School.

Make Your Mark was the theme of the Fair Haven School District Art Show, featuring more than 1,000 pieces of original art.
“The art show is a great way to celebrate student talents and diverse ideas,” Knollwood School Art Teacher Kelly Fogas said. “The displayed works and items created throughout the year show the growth of artistic ability, conceptualization, and eagerness in our students.”
Students in Kindergarten through third grade at Viola L. Sickles School and in fourth through eighth grade at Knollwood School each contributed at least one project for display at the show on April 14.
This year’s show represented the district’s implementation of new standards in the Visual Arts program.
Those standards focus on essential questions to help develop both critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Fair Haven Visual Arts students are encouraged to create, present, respond, and connect their artwork to ideas that have personal meaning. This was reflected in the context of each of the displayed pieces.
Featured at the Art Show this year was a ceramics wheel and the Knollwood students’ creations from its use. The wheel was acquired as the result of a grant requested by and awarded to the Knollwood School Art Teachers by the Fair Haven Parent Teacher Association.
Also on display at the show was a variety of drawings and paintings as well as paper, wood and ceramic sculptures.
Fair Haven School District Art Teachers are: RoseAnn LaBrocca K-3, Viola L. Sickles School; Kelly Fogas grades 4 to 8, Knollwood School; and Chris Dudick, 5th and 8th grades, Knollwood School.
Art Show coordinators were Stephanie Bates and Marisa Coar.

“Nothing in the creative process comes out absolutely beautiful the first time around,” children’s books author Lester Laminack recently told a group of Fair Haven parents. “If you focus on what your child did well – rather than what went wrong — then he or she will be encouraged to add more good things to the piece.”
