RFH Scholar Athlete’s National Signing Day

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School’s (RFH’s) senior scholar athletes have officially committed their talents to colleges for the fall.

There were 13 who took part in National Signing Day on Feb. 1 at the high school.

Surrounded by proud coaches and family members, they signed either National Letters of Intent or commitments to participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association programs at the colleges of their choice next year.

RFH students and their sports are:

• Nicholas Calabrese, Fairfield University, Boys soccer;
• Samuel Sapnar, St. Lawrence University, Boys Soccer;
• Hannah LoSavio, St. Joseph’s University, Girls Soccer;
• Grace Forsyth, Lehigh University, Girls Soccer;
• Samantha Beaudreault, College of St. Joseph’s, Girls Soccer;
• Thomas Chapin, University of Sioux Falls, Football;
• Timothy Leonard, Bentley University, Football;
• Michael Murdock, Lafayette College, Football;
• Michael O’Connor, Bryant University, Football;
• Tyler Pierson, Hobart and Williams Smith College, Football;
• Michael Ruane, University of Massachusetts, Football;
• Matthew Vecchiarelli, Holy Cross, Football;
• Michael Shaw, Loyola University, Mens Rowing.

Retro RFH Swim Champs

They were a swimming success. They still are.

Both the Boys’ and Girls’ RFH Swim Teams have ended the season with records to do some backflips over. RFH swimmers have always dove into the season with winning streak gusto.

Most recently, they won the 2015 state championship. And this year finished the season as Group A Central Division champs.

The Lady Dawgs had successful final meet with a “great win over Neptune,” RFH Swimming said on Twitter.

And, as for the boys, they “after a tough 1st loss to CBA … beat Neptune.”  Final record for the season: 10-1-1.

The RFH swimmers were state champs in 2015 and ended this season as Group A Central Division champs 2017.

So, the Retro Pic of the Day pays homage to those RFH swimmers of old … back in the late 1970s.

It is a glimpse from an old newspaper clipping of some of the proud RFH strokers after they were captured on a winning streak after a meet.

Recognize anyone? There are at least two with strong ties to the Fair Haven Fire Department. What year?

Fair Havenite Soars to Eagle Scout Rank

Fair Havenite Michael Frissora has soared to the Boy Scouts of America’s Eagle Scout rank.

The award of the status, the highest attainment in scouting, was conferred by BSA Troop 67 Scoutmaster Michael Maier at a Court of Honor on Jan. 8 at Tower Hill First Presbyterian Church in Red Bank.

RFH Makes AP Honor Roll

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) is one of 433 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on its 7th Annual AP® District Honor Roll.

To be included in the Honor Roll, RFH needed to, since 2014, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP exam scores of 3 or higher.

RFH boasts a commitment to  providing students with an array of AP courses that pique intellectual curiosity and prepare students for  post-secondary studies.

“Congratulations to all the teachers and administrators in this district who have worked so tirelessly to both expand access to AP and also to help students succeed on the AP Exams,” said Trevor Packer, the College Board’s head of AP and Instruction.

In 2016, more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement, or both, and/or consideration in the admission process.

Inclusion on the 7th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on a review of three years worth of AP data, from 2014 to 2016, and analysis of 37 AP exams, including world language and culture.

A Retro RFH Ladies’ Club

The Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) Ladies of the Round Table are featured as the Retro Pic of the Day.

It’s pretty likely that RFHers from this decade have never heard of such a thing. It, actually may have been indigenous to the Class of ’78.

The mission of this unique “group of good will and cheer,” as stated in the yearbook, was to “meet weekly to imbibe and to pursue leisurely interests …”

Hmmmm. They were very cool, as this editor recalls. Somehow, however, it’s highly doubtful that RFH would ever see a club like this one again.

The graphic, very well done, shows a round table in front of a fireplace with a softball, a bat, a pitcher (of something), and a pack of cigarettes.

Remember? Know any of these ladies?

Focus: RFH Alum Reunited

The snow came on Saturday and some diehard traditionalists and Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) alumni and friends went … to the annual New Year gathering at the Grady home.

Despite the weather, a few trudged not quite uphill, but at least from their cars down the street, in the snow, to what has become the annual gala at which all good RFHers congregate.

And though there were quite a bit fewer RFH alum partygoers this year, no enthusiasm was buried. Get the drift?

Spotlight: RFH Student Artwork

There’s a new arts-inspired initiative at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) that is casting a bright spotlight on students’ artwork.

The RFH National Art Honor Society (NAHS) and the RFH Multiple Disabilities (MD) Program have teamed up to provide artisan frames for the display of creations by RFH students. Featured will be paintings and photography by NAHS and MD students. The collection will be rotated regularly and be featured prominently throughout the school building on an ongoing basis.

Photographs of works by RFH art students at all levels will also be enlarged and placed above the student locker areas.

“This project has brought warmth and enhanced the school climate,” said Special Services teacher Jennifer Dellett. “Our goal is to have all three floors at RFH filled with stimulating artwork by the end of the school year.”

The purchase of 40 frames was made possible by a grant from the RFH Education Foundation. The grant request was written and submitted by Dellett and Art teacher Kristen Lanfrank.

For those who would like a closer view of the artwork, an event dubbed Community Art Opening is planned for the spring of 2017.

As part of the event, students involved in the program will provide community members with a tour of RFH and a discussion of all the art and images on display.

RFH: A Visit From a Sister School in China

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) recently hosted visitors from its sister school in China.

The group of 14 students, parents, and chaperones from the Hangzhou Entel Foreign Language School (HEFLS, or Entel) in Hangzhou, China visited on Oct. 7. RFH and Entel had entered into a partnership with the goal of building a bridge between language programs at the two schools.

The visitors from Entel enjoyed a week-long tour of various high schools and universities in the United States, making stops in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia before arriving at RFH.

There they attended an information session with members of the RFH administration before taking a tour of the school and participating in a few athletic activities. Members of the Entel group then shadowed RFH students as they attended either an English or History class.

Next up was a visit to Rebecca Wang-McKenna’s Chinese class, where the visitors participated in cultural activities in both Chinese and English.

The visit culminated in a luncheon for the guests attended by RFH Chinese Teachers Rebecca Wang-McKenna and Matt Yang, several RFH students, and several members of the RFH administration.

Previously, RFH students and chaperones had visited Entel for two weeks on two separate occasions in April of 2013 and November of 2015.

RFH and Entel are now exploring the possibility of an exchange program, or a shadowing program in which three to five Entel students will attend classes with RFH students throughout the school day.

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School’s (RFH) Bulldogs may have lost the homecoming game to St. John Vianney on Friday night, but even in the absence of homecoming queens and kings, festivities in the form of the new carnival tradition had students in a winning mood, unfazed by the impending knowing and unknowing losses of the court and the game.

Focus: Backstage at RFH Graduation

It’s like the backstage flurry in the moments before a major Broadway production — the prep and anticipation that comes before a high school graduation after years of students growing, learning, stumbling and shining in the spotlight together.

It’s like it was at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School’s (RFH’s) Class of 2016 graduation on Friday evening at Monmouth University.

Rumson-Fair Haven Retrospect was behind the scenes, capturing some of those backstage moments before the major milestone — graduation.
