Rumson resident and Brookdale Community College and Rutgers University professor Craig L. Scanlan passed away on Aug. 17. He was 69.
Born in East Orange, NJ to now-deceased parents Edwin L. and Jacqueline Bush Scanlan, Craig grew up in Little Silver and was a resident of Rumson for the past 25 years, according to his obituary from Thompson Memorial Home.
A graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, Lafayette College in Easton, PA and Rutgers University, where he completed his doctoral, Craig was a faculty member at Brookdale Community College where he established the respiratory therapy program, the obituary said.
After obtaining his doctorate, he took a faculty position at New Jersey’s academic health sciences center, now part of Rutgers, it added.
During his 31-year tenure at Rutgers (UMDNJ), he participated in education research, grant writing, book authoring, and PhD advisement in addition to teaching, the obituary said.
Scanlan was an accomplished author and well-respected in his field, having published numerous academic articles and several textbooks, it added.

“He frequently spoke and presented at both medical and academic institutions. He was the inaugural inductee into the Master Educators’ Guild at UMDNJ and was voted outstanding faculty member several times.
“He was also the recipient of numerous professional and academic awards. Since retiring in 2011 as Professor Emeritus, he continued to author textbooks and participate in professional activities to advance the field of pulmonary medicine through computer simulations and online education.
“Craig is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Barrie; son, Craig P. and wife Asuka; his brother, Gene, and sister-in-law Joanne; mother-in-law Jean Montigros; sister-in-law Dr. Patricia Montigros; and granddaughter, Jasmine.”
There will be a memorial celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29 at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Craig’s memory to the Rumson First Aid Squad or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
