RFH Science Scholar Accepted to NJ Governor’s School

It’s a science that Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) junior Henry Gaus has mastered.

The RFH Class of 2026 academic standout has been selected as a New Jersey Governor’s School scholar for the 42nd Governor’s School of New Jersey in the Sciences.

Henry’s school counselor, Patrick Karl, describes Henry as, “… a naturally curious and intellectually engaged student who consistently demonstrates a true love of learning.” In addition to his courseload in other academic and elective areas, Henry is currently finishing up his studies in Advanced Placement BiologyAdvanced Placement Physics 1 & 2 and AP Computer Science Principles. “I’ve always been more interested in math and science; it comes easily to me,” he said.

Gaus will participate in the exclusive program at Drew University from July 6 through 26.

According to the Drew University website, “The Governor’s School of New Jersey Program in the Sciences (GSNJS) is a three-week residential program where students are immersed in intense college-level research on the campus of Drew University. [The GSNJS] has several objectives. The first is to broaden the scholars’ appreciation and knowledge of science through exposure to a range of scientific topics and scientists. The subject of career exploration and choice is woven throughout the program. The second objective is to introduce scientific research to the scholars via hands-on research experience in a student’s area of interest. Resources from New Jersey’s industrial, governmental, and academic science establishments are used …”

The program at Drew consists of a core curriculum in a variety of different areas of science and mathematics (neurobiology, cell biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, anthropology), a laboratory course, team projects, and speakers on modern science.

As one of a distinguished group of high-achieving high school juniors from across the state, Henry will join a community of scholars, counselors, and faculty for an immersive academic experience.

The Governor’s School in the Sciences challenges students through a rigorous curriculum designed to deepen their scientific knowledge and foster collaborative learning. Each year, the Governor’s School admits gifted and talented students in 11th grade who are nominated by their schools through a rigorous application process.

This process weighs grades, letters of recommendation, science and math awards, extracurricular activities, PSAT scores, and a demonstration of an ongoing interest in science, as well as a strong desire to pursue such interests.
