Snow days … Students in the Rumson-Fair Haven area haven’t used one yet this school year. Still, the anticipation of one that comes along with a fouled weather forecast bring back a lot of snow-coated, mischief-laden memories.
There’s a blizzard of memories when it comes to winters past and how RFHers of yesteryear found some simple fun pretty fast when the school bell didn’t ring and that fire horn in Rumson and Fair Haven blasted its special “no school” code.
We know where all the Fair Haven kids went when that fire horn sounded. In addition to Third Street, Sportsman’s Field and Tower Hill, there was Crozier Court, a little hidden gem, Morton’s Hill at the end of Riverlawn Drive, and any other spot with a hill worthy of a sled, Flexible Flyer disc or even a cafeteria tray.
Hey, one old time Fair Havenite even said that Dr. Powers used to tie sleds up to the back of his Mustang and tow them around the borough. That’s one we missed.
But, Rumson had its secret sledding spots, too. And one of those spots was the infamous Stump’s Hill and its other side, dubbed Suicide Hill.
So, the Retro Pic of the (George) Day takes us back to “the hill” in Rumson, or something close to it, on one of those days of simple fun on the Rumson slopes.
RFH grad and yearbook photographer George Day captured this scene in the 1970s.
We don’t know who these guys dotting the hill are, but people could probably hazard a very good guess. Anyone?
Where, exactly, was this infamous hill? Do you know? Any other special Rumson snow day spots?
Many thanks, again, to the fabulous George Day for this pic!
