If the class fits, snap the pic? Well, that may or may not hold true for this group of RFH Class of ’73 sophomores.
Sophomoric. The string of adjective synonyms that encapsulate the mood of the brood include: young, brash, naive, foolish, reckless. Some in this crew of yearbook posers may have been one or all of these things that year. And you can almost tell who’s which by virtue of the poses struck — and out in front of the high school, no less.
You could say that this RFH yearbook shot is a sign of the times on a sign. Ponder that —and the fashion and poses. So, the year would have been 1970. What’s posted behind the girls’ row is up for debate. Hmmmmm …
And as you think on that, think about how the fashion this particular year seemed a bit less preppie — as was status quo for RFH — and a bit more inaugural ’70s mishmash. In the front row of girls alone, there’s the skirt and knee sock ensemble, ’70s dress with no socks, pants and culottes suits. Remember culottes? And, of course, there was at least one pair of groovy ’70s pants in the bunch.
Let’s not forget that this photo was taken when girls’ had just been granted the right to wear pants to school. Yes, you read that right. Girls weren’t allowed to wear pants to school for some time. And, yes, there were mini protests and pleas. There was even a point in time when a deal was struck for the girls to wear pants under skirts to school to keep them from freezing their behinds off in the winter. Yes, truth. Though, they had to take the pants off once inside the building. Really.
The guys in this pic are posing in pretty standard button-down fashion, Yet, there’s a renegade ’70s plaid panted and a hippie vested, stripe-panted couple of boys holding down the RFH front lawn sign.
So, ponder all that, say “Cheese!” to picture day and “Cheers!” to those RFH Yearbook snapshot reminders of yesteryear.
Know anyone here? They just celebrated 50 years, that’s half a century, since RFH graduation!
