Haul out the garland. It’s that time of the year when all good organizations start the holiday partying.
And back in the 1980s or so, this crew of Fair Haven Fire Department’s Ladies’ Auxiliary leaders had a knack for getting those festivities going.
It started with a little decorating. And what’s decorating without at least a strand of sparkly garland over the kitchen counter of the firehouse’s upstairs — where all good parties have always been held.
And, of course, there was always good homemade food and spirits for the spirited ladies. We’re not quite sure at what phase of party prep this crew was, but they were certainly festively dressed for the occasion, wreath pins, colors and all.
What they were serving up is a mystery, with the exception of some holiday cups on a serving tray and what looks like some jars of pickles and a can of olives. There’s a pitcher of either water or some concoction and a roll of paper towels to sop it all up — whatever it is.
The holiday cheer was always overflowing with this bunch. All you need to do is take a gander at those grins. They tell the true story of contentment in serving — their town — and making merriment to last a lifetime and pass on to the next generation.
All of the ladies in this pic are gone now except one — Barbara Lang (second from left next to Mary Farley).
And to cap off the retro holiday cheer with a present celebration, it’s Barbara Lang’s birthday today! So, remember the good holiday times at the hands of some prime Fair Haven volunteers and wish the last one left of this group a very happy, healthy birthday and thanks for the memories!
