Here’s one more retro treat for the Halloween road …
The trick, one would have to say, is gathering all that candy in those pillow cases. Do they still do that? Hmmmm …
Yes, this motley trio of a cop, a hobo and a goofy baseball player, made their way through the Fair Haven neighborhoods in the 1980s, gathering treats and treating themselves to good times all the way.
Trick or treating rules and curfews were a little, or a lot, more relaxed back in the day. Note the absence of glow sticks and hovering parents. Sure, there was worry about razor blades in apples. But, for the most part, the dumping of the goods on the living room floor after a night of trick-or-treating, culminated in who got the most and biggest candy bars.
There were families that hosted apple bobbing. Remember that travesty? Nothing like a bunch of kids nearly drowning to get a hold of one stinking apple from Delicious Orchards … or the Acme.
Then there were those fantastical families that gave out full-sized candy bars. Remember the house in Fair Haven where kids could get big Toblerone bars? I do. It was my best friend! Well, since then, year after year, the candy, even fun-sized, has shrunk. Truly. So, go ahead, have another from the kids’ loot sack.
So, here’s to the biggest treat of the season — tricks and treats among neighborhood friends! May the biggest candy bar be with you and the biggest and best of memories from those treks through hometown neighborhoods and lots of goodness to go.
Your favorite treat? How about those pillowcases?
