Happy Monday, Rumson-Fair Haven area friends and fans!
OK, so spring has not exactly sprung as we would have liked quite yet, but it looks like there’s hope of some sort, soggy as it may be, for a rise in temps as the week progresses. Please!
In the meantime, it’s a chilly start to the week today.
There are Borough Council meetings in both Rumson and Fair Haven this week. Fair Haven’s meeting is Monday night at 7 p.m. at Borough Hall. Click here for the agenda. Rumson’s meeting is Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Borough Hall. Click here for that agenda.
Taking a look back at last week, here are some tidbits from the notebook the likes of which your editor is going to start sharing on a weekly basis:
• RFH Tower Players’ Young Frankenstein was a big success, we hear, even though they had to postpone opening night to closing night when the first day of spring brought that snow.
Rumson-Fair Haven Retrospect couldn’t get to the show, unfortunately, so anyone who has photos they’d like to share, we’d be happy to post them! Just send them, with proper credit, to [email protected].
• Fair Haven Mayor Ben Lucarelli last week returned from his bike- and pedestrian-safety summit in Washington, D.C.. He had lots of information to share. Check it out.
• Oh, and there was a little post-St. Paddy’s Day gala at the Knights of Columbus. And, for those of you who’ve been around for a while, you’ll know who played the piano — none other than longtime Fair Haven resident Teddie Caulfield.
In her 80s, Teddie tickled the ivories at the hall on Saturday and was thrilled to do so. She also still plays for the Rotary Club every Thursday at Navesink Country Club. Teddie is the and grandma to several RFH grads and at least one still in school.
So good to see this pic of her playing!
• Oh, and you may know that Fair Haven’s town-wide yard sale is on May 2. What you may not know is that Fair Haven officials have pretty much decided that, in order to accommodate the residents dealing with unloading stuff after the sale, they will be extending the hours of the bulk drop-off at the Public Works yard to probably about 5 p.m. the same day.
The next date, after the 2nd, for bulk-drop off will be May 16 during the usual drop-off hours. Check at Fair Haven Borough Hall for more details.
• DPW workers in Fair Haven have been out filling potholes for a few weeks to save some cars after all the snow and ensuing road damage. Stay tuned for our little tidbit story on snow removal.
• In Rumson, it’s time to get applications in for the Rumson Garden Club’s Rita Morgan Boyle Scholarship. The deadline is May 1.
The scholarship will go to “a Rumson resident who plans to attend, or is attending, an accredited college and has environmental studies, i.e., conservation, marine science or earth science.
“The applicant is required to write an essay outlining his or her interests and accomplishments, which should include academic studies and extracurricular activities.”

• Oh, and just a reminder that the Oceanic Bridge will be closed for repairs overnight, from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., but will be open with single-lane closures during staggered times during the day.
From the latest county release … “The Oceanic Bridge schedule, weather permitting, Sunday through Friday mornings, from on or about March 24 to April 30 will be:
• 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. — both bridge lanes open to all traffic;
• 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — single lane closure with alternating lanes of vehicular traffic;
• 2 to 6 p.m. — both bridge lanes open to all traffic;
• 6 to 10:30 p.m. — single lane closure with alternating lanes of vehicular traffic.
County officials originally said the work would be finished by mid-April. Now they’re saying it’ll be more like April 30. The overnight closure hours differ now by half an hour on both ends.
• People have heard about the gunfire in Rumson. Well, police gave us the true story on that. Check it out. Thanks to Detective Chris Isherwood for providing the information.
• And, in Rumson, Paul Shea was remembered over the weekend and laid to rest. RIP, Mr. Shea. If anyone would like to send photos and/or memories of Mr. Shea, we would love to do a little tribute to honor him. Send either or both to [email protected].
• In Fair Haven, Jeanetter Crowell was memorialized and laid to rest. She was a lovely lady with many fans. RIP, Mrs. Crowell. We found an interesting article about her from the 1960s and a fraud perpetuated on her. Stay tuned for that.
There’s more to come this week. We’ll be out and about taking all sorts of feature photos as well.
We’ll also be taking pics of people who would like to meet our challenge to honor former RFH teacher George Giffin with a cartwheel or dance to welcome spring.
This should be fun! And for all the chickens out there, buck up! You can do it!
With that, I have to say, I’ll see you around the towns!
