UPDATE: The bridge has been repaired and is currently in working condition.
If you’re thinking of traveling to and from Rumson and/or Middletown via the Oceanic Bridge, plan another route.
As of about 3 p.m., Rumson police advised that the Oceanic Bridge is closed, or stuck open, “due to mechanical problems.”
It’s a recurring problem with the bridge built in 1939 that has been slated for replacement for a few years now. The bascule, or movable, span of the bridge was replaced in 2012. The general consensus of area residents is that they’d like to see the classic style of the bridge stay the same, bascule span in tact, as they feel it suits the landscape best.
The bridge replacement plans are in what is dubbed the Local Concept Development phase. Click here for more information, access to input and comments.
