A Glimpse Back at Sickles School’s Book Fair

Call it a well-read event.

Fair Haven’s Viola L. Sickles School officials are claiming major success with the annual PTA Book Fair.

Featuring various genres and titles from Scholastic Publishing, the Book Fair was held from Nov. 14 to 18. Family Night at the fair allows parents and siblings take part. It was held on the evening of Nov. 15 and was dubbed a “door-buster” success.

Many students and families took the opportunity to buy books for use in the classroom as well, using the teachers’ wish lists as a guideline.

This year’s Book Fair at Sickles School was organized by PTA Book Fair Committee members Jen Baron, Vicky Hays, Heather Lombardo, Kerry Maguire, and Sheilah Olson.

The Knollwood School Book Fair is set for April.

Sickles Halloween Flash Mob Flashback

It was another year, another Halloween parade at Fair Haven’s Viola L. Sickles School.

In case you didn’t get a glimpse into the Oct. 30 event, the school district is giving a look back at the new flash mob dance in the park now.

Students in kindergarten through third grades danced to  Monster Mash and Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) in a performance led and choreographed by Vanessa Berry of Kick Dance Studios in Fair Haven and Rumson. Music was provided by John Angelucci of Monmouth Stereo on Broad Street in Shrewsbury.

“So that’s how we roll around here,” Sickles School Principal Cheryl Cuddihy told the audience. Cuddihy and the Sickles staff members dressed as minions, based on characters from the animated movie of the same name, in support of this year’s school theme, “A Minion Reasons to Love Sickles.”

First graders at Fair Haven’s Sickles School were recently taught a potentially life-saving lesson, thanks to the efforts of three community volunteers.

On Sept. 17, Beverly Cochrane-Maguire and Richard Eisenbeis, both of the Volunteers In Sheriff’s Community Programs (VISCOMP) at the Monmouth County Police Academy, visited the elementary school classrooms along with county Sheriff’s Office intern Chris Wolcott to instruct students in what’s dubbed Seek 911 protocol.

The students were taught:

• how to decide if a situation warrants a 911 emergency call;
• different types of emergencies (fire, medical, and police);
• types of phones that can be used to call 911;
• and the questions that will be asked by a 911 operator.

The students viewed a short video and then placed practice 911 calls with the assistance of the volunteers.

The following is an edited press release from the Fair Haven School District:

This year’s Lunch with a VIP was a success at Fair Haven’s Viola L. Sickles school in Fair Haven.

Sponsored by the Fair Haven Parent Teacher Association, the lunch event, this year held from March 11 to 13, offers first-, second- and third-grade students the opportunity to enjoy lunch, treats, and fun activities with their own special VIP adult guests at a festive celebration.

“It provides them with a unique opportunity to connect with their loved ones during the school day, and to create a lasting memory,” said Jen Halcrow, who served as event co-chair with Suzanne Duffy.

This year’s event featured coffee for the adults, donated by Booskerdoo in Fair Haven, and cupcakes by Cupcake Magician on Monmouth Street in Red Bank (a hit with everyone).

A photo booth, a BINGO game and a Just Dance activity, led by Sickles School Principal Cheryl Cuddihy, added to the fun.

“It was such a pleasure to watch the different generations share stories, collaborate on Just Dance moves, and strategize for Bingo!” said Cuddihy. “We love having guests visit our school, and we were delighted to spend time with our VIPs.”
