In Memoriam: Little Silver Resident Claire Deverin, 93

There is a saying ~ “People may not remember what you said, but will always remember how you made them feel.”  If you were fortunate enough to know and spend time with Claire you felt loved.

Little Silver and Jupiter, Florida resident Claire Deverin passed away peacefully on Aug. 6 with her family by her side. She was 93.

“She was a former member of Holy Cross Church in Rumson and St. Christopher Church in Hope Sound, FL. 
Claire was a member of the Navesink and Jupiter Hills country clubs, where she enjoyed playing competitive golf, paddle and tennis.  For many years she was a volunteer and committee member at
the Children’s Psychiatric Center of Monmouth County and
several other local charities.   
Most of all, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who cherished the time spent with family and friends.”

Claire is predeceased by: her husband of 65 years, Bernard; her son, Gerry; and her two sisters, Myrna Anderson and Jean Frank.

She is survived by: her four children, Bernie (wife Midge), Sean, Charlene (husband Robin Kirtley), Eileen (husband Harry Radovich); daughter-in-law, Lori Deverin; sister, Lucille Roberts; and her adored sixteen grandchildren, Margaux, James, Walter, Grace, Sean, Macauley, Conor, Hugh, Tori, Harry, Kendall, Hayden, Peter, Ryan, Peter, and Kathleen.

The Deverin family would like to extend a very warm and special thank you to her friends and aides Paula, Desere, Sandy, Tina and Milly for their love, kindness and care over the last several years.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 11:15 a.m. at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Red Bank.

In Memoriam: Longtime Little Silver Resident, RFH Class of ’52 Grad, Phyllis Darragh, 87

Former longtime Little Silver resident and Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High (RFH) School Class of 1952 graduate Phyllis Ann Darragh passed away on Feb. 10 at her son’s home in Windham, NH. She was 87.

In Memorium: Former 43-Year Fair Havenite, Teacher, Agnes Maffey Turtur, 99

Former longtime Fair Havenite and area teacher Agnes Maffey Turtur passed away peacefully at Monmouth Medical Center on April 16. She was 99.

“She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who had boundless energy, caring for all those who she loved. Family meant everything to her. Whether you knew her as Agnes, Mom, Grandma, Ama, Aunt Agnes or Gigi, you could always count on her unconditional love … She was always a beach lover and for the past 9 years she adored spending summers on the cabana deck at Surfrider Beach Club in Sea Bright, talking to everyone who walked by. She celebrated her birthday there every Labor Day Weekend and everyone on the beach sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to her. Agnes never lost her cognitive ability, and was able to memorize her niece’s 10-digit phone number by one verbal cue and execute the call just four days prior to her death.”

Born to the late Charles and Marie Maffey in Elizabeth, Agnes graduated from Sacred Heart Elementary School and Battin High School there and went on to receive a B.S. in Education from Rider College in 1941. She accelerated her studies and graduated in three years, commuting every day from Elizabeth to the college in Trenton.

In 1943 she married Felix J. Turtur III, also of Elizabeth, traveling with him and teaching school wherever the U.S. Army stationed him during World War II.  

In 1951, the couple settled at the Jersey Shore. They moved to Fair Haven in 1957 where they lived and raised their family for 43 years before moving to Shrewsbury in 2000.

Agnes was a teacher at the Markham Place School in Little Silver from 1957 until her retirement in 1982.

She loved traveling with her family, which included trips to Italy, Hawaii, Disney World, and many cruises and winters on Siesta Key Beach in Florida.

Agnes was predeceased by: Felix, her husband of 64 years; her sister, Grace A. Maffey; and brother, Charles G. Maffey. 

She is survived by: her loving daughter, Marlane Turtur Bade, of Fair Haven; her grandchildren, Kristina Bade Binder (John), of Fair Haven and Stephen A. Bade (Kathleen) of Brielle; her great-grandchildren, Thomas, Charlotte, Logan, Delaney, Weston and step great-grandchildren, JB and Ellie; and her brother, Constant O. Maffey (Afra) of Mechanicsburg, PA.

A memorial Mass celebrating Agnes’ life will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Wounded Warrior Project.

Little Silver A&P Now Acme

They were putting the finishing touches on it Tuesday night. The Little Silver A&P is now an Acme.

The store, at 507 Prospect Avenue is open. According to the recording on the store’s telephone system, it is open the same hours as the A&P was: 7 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday; and until 10 p.m. on Sunday.

 

The Acme in Fair Haven has long been considered a special kind of meeting place for area residents.

When this editor’s mom went to “pick up a few things,” that usually meant her children would see her hours later. And, there were many times the conversation in the produce aisle took over so much that one of us had to go back to pick up what she forgot.

Well, we’ll see. With the extra couple of hours open, you never know who may meander over to Little Silver.
