The following is an edited obituary of Margaret “Peggy” Werber from Thompson Memorial Home:

Former Rumson resident, business owner and community leader Margaret “Peggy” Werber passed away suddenly on Friday, June 3.

A lineal descendant of Thomas Hinckley, governor of Plymouth Colony and first governor of Massachusetts, Mrs. Werber was a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was known to epitomize grace, intelligence and kind heartedness, her obituary from Thompson Memorial said.

She was also known as an accomplished equestrian who “graced the cover of the June 15, 1947 issue of Parade Magazine having won, at age 16, the International Open Jumping Championship between the United States, Canada and Mexico against riders of all ages, both amateur and professional,” her obituary added. “It was at one of her events that she met her future husband, Charles ‘Jerry’ Werber, to whom she was married for 61 years.”

A tireless volunteer, Peggy became president of the Junior League of Long Island. After moving to Rumson, she joined the Junior League of Monmouth County where she became Volunteer of the Year in 1970 and, subsequently, president from 1972-74. After retiring from the Junior League, she joined Family and Children Services of Monmouth County and served a term as that agency’s president.

A long time member of Rumson Country Club, she was the first woman elected to its Board of Directors. In addition, she counted Sea Bright Beach Club as one of her favorite places. An astute business woman, she and Jerry owned the popular women’s clothing boutique Rumson Roulette until retiring to Vero Beach, Florida. Upon her husband’s death, she returned to her beloved Sea Bright.

Peggy lost her dear Jerry in 2010 and is survived by: her sister, Patricia H. Johnson; and her son, Randall G. Werber, and wife Barbara; her daughter, Carol, and husband Jack Frost; and her daughter, Mindy, and husband Jack Pettit; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren, “who will always miss their sweet Granny.

“Special thanks to Em Lawes, B.J. Thompson, Lee Weber, June Stewart and Diane Dey for their unfailing friendship over the years. Finally, she wants all her friends to know that she plans to laugh with Ethel, Peggy, Ellen and Jean and dance once again with her Jerry.”

A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, June 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. A memorial service will be held at St. George’s-by-the-River at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 9.
