The Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) Surf Team rode a wave of success on Sunday. The team took fourth place in the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) Northeast Conference High School Championships competition on Sunday in Spring Lake.
RFH competed with more than 20 teams in the division, garnering the fourth place in the entire northeast and third in New Jersey for the men’s shortboard, women’s shortboard and longboard competitions.
“So proud of this team!,” the team’s Facebook post said. “We have come so far in four years!!”
And they have. The RFH Surf Team is relatively new. It conceived of in the summer of 2015 by then eighth grader and avid surfer Emily Grossarth, who became a surfing star at RFH and nationally.
With some teamwork, brainstorming and collaboration with RFH faculty, the team was introduced at RFH in the fall of 2016. The small team has a spring as well as a fall season of practices and competitions, which is unique to the RFH and high school sports calendar. Members practice four to five days per week in the surf of Monmouth County beaches from Sandy Hook to Spring Lake.
Congrats RFH Surf Team!
