Scene Around: Knollwood Students’ STEAM Tank Winning Fentanyl Fight

They’re fighting the Fentanyl fight and winning — in one small way.

Sixth graders from Knollwood School in Fair Haven recently competed in what is known as the statewide education system’s STEAM Tank Challenge, of the NJ School Boards Association, as the team dubbed The Fentanyl Fighters and won third place out of 600 competing.

“Their plan, based on a mindset of bringing awareness to the dangers of drug use and Fentanyl through a kid centered approach, is truly groundbreaking; and we are so incredibly proud that their hard work and innovation was recognized in such a special way down in Atlantic City today!” school officials said in a social media post.

STEAM Tank “gives students the chance to invent, modify, or use problem-solving skills to solve real-world problems,” the STEAM Tank narrative says.

“Facilitated by teachers and advisers, the STEAM Tank™️ Challenge encourages students to work collaboratively to identify and develop innovative solutions to issues such as climate change and the environment, societal problems and situations that need resolution in our schools, communities, state and globally.”

“Be on the lookout for great things to come from these four students,” Knollwood’s social media post added. “Their program is genuinely unique and has gained the support of many local resources. Henry, Max, Jack, and Lior, we could not possibly be more proud of you! And to our GATE teacher, Ms. Ganley, you are a gem and we are so lucky to have you! This is only the beginning and we can’t wait to see what’s next!”
