Bullseye! The guys of the Fair Haven Fire Department back in the 1960s hit it on a regular basis playing darts.
Call it a league of the emergency responders’ own. It was definitely a way to chase the winter blues away with a little camaraderie and recreation. Wherever there was a board, these guys followed. But they usually didn’t have to go any further than the rec room at the firehouse. And the game? It was always a hit. Never a miss — bullseye or not.
Oh, things were casual and on board by the board. But there was an awful lot of sharp shooting from wrist. After all, it’s all in the wrist, right? Well, that and the eyes. And then there was the practice that made near perfect for this crew.
Hey, when that Plectron radio went off — that old thing a grade above smoke signals to broadcast fires and first aid calls to the firemen — the guys’ cars went whizzing down the streets to the firehouse, the call and back. Unwinding after a call or on social occasions almost always involved some darts. Practice. And fun. We’re thinking there were some trophies involved as well.
Who darted? Know these guys? Sharpest shooter in the bunch? That’s a tough one to call.
