It’s cool to be a good ghoul in school, right?
Wait. Is that a lobster raising its claw to answer the teacher? Why, yes, it is. The teacher is unfazed. But the lesson? Well, it seems that this day in a Fair Haven 1980s classroom is all about costumes and little to nothing about reading, writing and ‘rithmetic.
That’s how Halloween has always been done in Fair Haven schools, plus a little pageantry in the auditorium. The basics in learning had to take a bit of a back seat to celebrating the season. And that was just fine with students.
This Halloween classic is from a classroom at Sickles School, formerly Willow Street School, in 1985.
So, a football player, a lobster, a Mad Hatter, a biker and a wizard walk into a classroom ….
None of these were listed as the most popular costumes of the 80s. Which were? Well, Ninja warriors, Alf (remember him?), Pac Man, Cabbage Patch kids, Jason, Freddy Krueger (OK, so that’s a bit much for kids), Superman among others.
Scary didn’t win the ghouling in schools in 1985. Hmmmmm …
What was your favorite kid Halloween costume?
