Prosecutor: Area Wife and Husband’s Deaths Ruled Murder-Suicide

Authorities have determined that a husband and wife who were found dead in their Keyport home last week died as a result of a murder-suicide, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced on Monday.

The case background …

On Tuesday morning, March 19, Keyport police responded to a residence on Chingarora Avenue on a request for a wellness check.

Upon arrival, responding officers found the victim, Ekaterina Kalyapina, 37, and her husband Ilya Gagin, 39, both dead. Two small dogs were found within the residence, unharmed. The MCSPCA was contacted and took custody of the dogs.

An autopsy conducted by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed the cause and manner of death for the couple was homicide and suicide, respectively. The husband murdered the wife, according to authorities, and then killed himself.
