Prosecutor: Area Teen Indicted on Attempted Murder Charges in Shooting

An area teen has been indicted on attempted murder and related weapons charges stemming from a September shooting incident, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced on Friday.

Calvin Joseph, 18, has been charged with one count of first-degree attempted murder, one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon (handgun), and one count of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in connection with the Asbury Park incident.

The case background …

On Thursday, Sept. 11, Asbury Park police responded to a report of a shooting incident in the vicinity of the 100 block of Monmouth Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered two adult male victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

The first victim, identified as Tyshan Small, 37, was rushed to a local hospital where he was later be pronounced dead. The second victim was also transported to a local hospital where he received medical treatment for a non-life-threatening injury.

An investigation by members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and the Asbury Park Police Department determined Jerod Jones, 32, of Neptune City, to be the person responsible for the murder of Tyshan Small and the shooting of the other male victim. Jones remains a fugitive at this time.

The investigation also revealed that moments after the initial shooting by Jones, a second shots-fired incident took place at the same location. The investigation resulted in Joseph being identified as the individual responsible for the second shooting.  There were no injuries as a result of the second shooting.

Joseph was found and arrested by Asbury Park police on Friday, Sept. 12, at which time he was found to be, and subsequently charged with, unlawfully possessing a firearm.
