Yes, yesterday was Presidents’ Day. The day designated to honor presidents was first observed in 1971, borne out of the birthday of the first U.S. president, George Washington.
And, as with the country, all RFH classes have presidents. The high school also has first presidents — those freshmen who get elected to represent the class.
So, in honor of those first presidents, in our own Rumson-Fair Haven Retrospect way, our Retro Pic of the (George) Day honors a first RFH president and a staged moment at what was the high school’s annual variety show — The Freshmen Follies. In this look at the past, RFH Class of ’78 President Wart Tietz was having his finale moment as classmate Mouseketeers ushered the prez onto the stage with a bit of fanfare.
Oh, yes, and Tietz was also a star in the show in a rendition of South Pacific’s Honey Bun. Yes, it was my skit. And Tietz was a great sport and gladly clad himself in a coconut top, grass skirt and work boots. He even topped it off with a cigar in hand. The guilt is still there from the coconuts I made him wear that caused a major rash. Sorry, Ward!
Who was your favorite class president at RFH? Hail to which chief? Send us your retro pics at [email protected].
Thanks to the fabulous George Day for another classic look back in RFH time!
Day’s photos are for exclusive publication on R-FH Retro. Not for publication anywhere else.
