Longtime area sports writer, native Red Bank resident and Red Bank Catholic High School (RBC) graduate, Jim Hintelmann, passed away peacefully on Feb. 7. He was 86.

One of four brothers, Jim was born in Red Bank to Lavinia and Joseph P. Hintelmann on March 27, 1938. He graduated from Saint James Elementary School and RBC Class of ‘56. He continued his education at Monmouth University and later became a journalist.

“Jim was a sports writer with a passion for writing about local high school sports, especially his alma mater, Red Bank Catholic. He worked for several local newspapers, including the Ocean County Observer, the Red Bank Register and most recently, the Two River Times. In 2013 he was honored with the Shore Athletic Club Media Achievement Award. He wrote about so many local high school games and athletes, and had an amazing memory for statistics. He could recite the statistics of athletes over many decades, and loved talking about memorable games. Jim was a big professional baseball fan and loved the Red Sox. He also had a great love for the weather, and was fascinated by storms and natural disasters. He loved nothing more than a good snowstorm. Jim was a communicant of Saint James Roman Catholic Church.”
