In Memoriam: Former Rumsonite, Iconic Restaurant Operator, George Gill Jr., 89

Former Rumsonite, George P. Gill Jr., more recently of Red Bank, passed away in his home on Feb. 4. He was 89.

Born to the late George P. and Anna Bottagaro Gill Sr., George was a graduate of Red Bank Catholic High School Class of 1953. He earned a bachelor of science degree from then Monmouth College in 1962.

He was a communicant of St. James RC Church, a member of Sea Bright Lawn and Tennis, where he was a club champion, Navesink Country Club, and Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage, CA.

“He was a certified public accountant and partner in Eastern Innkeepers Association, which operated popular local restaurants such as Barnacle Bill’s, What’s your Beef, and Lock, Stock & Barrel. He also founded and remained a partner of the New Shrewsbury Racquet Club. George was an outstanding athlete his whole life. He lettered in baseball and basketball in both high school and college. He played baseball on the semi-pro Rumson A’s and was a member of the Red Bank Tires championship winning baseball team. He represented the U.S. in senior tennis tournaments around the world. He also maintained a single digit golf handicap. George’s other hobbies included being a Vincent Motorcycle enthusiast along with his dear friend, Mike O’Shea, of Sea Bright.

He was predeceased by his brother, Charles Thomas Gill and his granddaughter, Emily Jane Tooker.

George is survived by: his wife of 44 years, Waverely (Schindler) Gill; his children, George Patrick Gill III and wife Wendi, of Red Bank, Denise Lynn Mitchell and husband Jeff, of Washington, DC and Laura Jean Tooker and husband Michael, of Rumson; his brother, Gregory Francis Gill, of Palm Desert, CA; his sister, Gloria Ann Walker and husband Tim, of Scarborough, ME; sisters-in-law, Susan Termenillo, of FL, and Karen Hester and husband Francis, of Eatontown; his mother-in-law, Marion Schindler, of FL; and his beloved grandchildren, Abigail, Chester (Alyssa) and Peter Tooker, Amelia and Joseph Mitchell, Jamie and Dennis Gill; and great grandchildren, Nathaniel and Francis.

A memorial gathering will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank with a service at 6:30. Private family interment will follow on Friday.
