The heat is on and the countdown has already begun to the Fair Haven Firemen’s Fair.

And, back in the day, the 1960s day, the fire department, rather than raffling off a car, SUV or a big chunk of cash (as in Super 50/50), decided to make a boat the prized prize of the fair. And they advertised that with the help of some fire department-affiliated bathing beauties.

Scene Around: Donovan’s 50th; Yesteryear ‘Cheers!’

It was something to dance about — or “Cheers!” about, at least. And while there was no dancing in the street in Sea Bright, there was what looked like some dancing on the deck at Donovan’s Reef on Aug. 10 when the iconic Sea Bright beachfront bar and grill was celebrated for its 50 years in existence by a Monmouth County official and its owners.

Longtime Fair Haven-based, family-owned marine construction firm, Rice Associates, was recently recognized by River Rats, the borough’s 71-year-old non-profit educational sailing club, with what has been dubbed the Beacon of Light Award.

Retro RFHers’ Donovan’s Party Time

RFH Class of ’78 reunited for the 25th reunion

Yes, it’s reunion season. It’s also this RFH Class of ’78 editor’s birthday season. Ahem. So, there’s no better time to take you back again to a hoot of a 25th for the RFH Class of ’78 at an iconic spot in its original little-shack- on-the-beach form — Donovan’s Reef.

Before Sandy, a “DO” at Donovan’s meant something entirely different for RFHers reuniting. Rather than a symbol of “We can do it. We can rebuild.” it was more like a simple “Let’s do the Donovan’s thing!”
