Cheers to sunny fall days and classic looks back! The sun is out and, despite the fall sting in the air, it’s something to cheer about. So, we’re taking you back, once again, to a special crew of RFH cheerleaders — the boys of RFH’s Class of ’78 in an encore of this Oct. 8, 2015 Retro Pic of the (George) Day from two views! Cheers!

The 1977 RFH Powder Puff Football game was a good one that made for some great photo ops.

A Retro Happy Thanksgiving from the Kids’ Table

Our annual Thanksgiving tribute to the kids’ table … Remember that? Happy Thanksgiving, all! Stay safe. Stay healthy. Enjoy!

It’s Thanksgiving, and, yes, it’s all about giving thanks.

So, the Retro Pic of the Day is an ode to just that.

It’s a snapshot back in time to the 1960s with a sibling duo from Fair Haven — Ben and Kate Hamilton. Ben passed away and Kate had posted this picture on Facebook giving thanks for him. RIP, Ben.

The photo brings back memories of the era the kids’ holiday table. Remember that one?

Retro RFH Football Halftime Show Folk

It’s not all about the game when it comes to RFH’s football games. Games have always been a very entertaining full-on production, featuring a big halftime show. And, back in the day, that classic RFH-RBC rivalry game always one of the showiest, most unique halftimes of all high schools. They featured, twirlers, color guard, marching bands, cheerleaders and the one and only RFH Drill Team. All encompassed the entertainment that championed many wins. How could it not? It was and is all about the RFH winning spirit. Go Dawgs!

Retro RFH Thanksgiving Touchdown

RFH Thanksgiving Day football game

If some old RFHers had a pre-Thanksgiving turkey wishbone to yank on, they may be hoping to pull the bigger end to make a wish to revisit their own RFH Thanksgiving Day Homecoming game. Yes, the homecoming of today is already over and the RFH Dawgs are already on the state championship path.

But, back in the day, Thanksgiving, to be exact, the RFH football season used to peak with what then was the classic rivalry homecoming/Thanksgiving Day game between Red Bank Catholic and RFH. Two days before, everyone was headed home from college for the big homecoming reunion, dance and, of course reunited partying at Ichabod’s (now Woody’s, owned by RFHer Chris Wood).

A classic reprise … just because we’re all about playing that field at RFH. Did they need drive? Well, they had it here in the most classic ’70s form ...

Fall is football time. And when the home game is over and the coldest of cold snaps hits, it’s bundle-up-and-ride-with-it-time. After all, sometimes it’s not all about the game for spirited RFHers.

Retro RFH Class in Gym

A reprise (originally posted on March 15, 2017, in honor of RFH gym teacher Lynn Broten, who recently passed away …

With the sting of the first fall frost and longing for that breath of warm fresh air, thoughts turn to days spent in the young teen sweat-infused gym at RFH. Oh, the ritual of that mandatory indoor exercise.

Ahhh, memories. More like a little PTSD remembrance of the torture the class was for some — especially when stuck inside. When you’re not an athlete and, for that matter, can barely volley a ball (and I mean barely), gym class day was the day of trying to get some sort of note of excuse from your mom to get you out of the embarrassment. Forgery became a talent. Though some moms could feel the uncoordinated kids’ pain and easily relented with prompt penning.

A reprise of an RFH classic from 2016, just because it’s that time again …

Election Day is here.

And, as usual, political season has been in full swing in more ways than one — punches are being thrown in all directions.

It’s why they call it silly season. But, let’s take the focus off the national and local politics of today and step back in time to the 1970s and politics as it was with RFH students and teachers.

Retro RFH Ghostly Halloween Haunting

A reprise from 2017, just because … BOO!

Scary season has set in … in more ways than one.

People in the Rumson-Fair Haven area have been haunting up their homes, crafting costumes and getting into the spirit. So, why not add a little extra retro spooking from RFH students of the past?

BOO who or what? It was all in the haunt for RFHers back in the 1970s. They started getting the Halloween party going early on and ended up with a pretty festive feast of ghouls on the grounds of the high school and, yes, beyond.

A Halloween reprise, just because it’s an all-time favorite photo of costumed Rumson besties …

Are you a good witch or a bad witch? Which witch is which? Either way, or both, the rain never falls on some of the best of times between best buddies. And it all starts when they’re growing up together like these two little witches with lots of magical moments ahead.

Retro RFH Rainy Day Lunching

Lunch time for Halloween trick-or-treaters at RFH circa 1977
Photo/George Day

Well, rainy Halloween week’s days like today and hangin’ in the Senior Commons at RFH were just about as cool as The Carpenters’ hit Rainy Days and Mondays song in the 1970s. It didn’t have to be on Monday, though. And nothing got RFHers down when it came to Halloween fun and lounging. The fun just stayed inside and all RFH cozy-like.

Let’s face it. It’s not every day that you get the chance to grab a bite of good ol’ RFH cafeteria grub — or a little scary costumed sustenance, let’s say.

It’s also not every day that you get the chance to “cop a squat” in the RFH senior lounge to ingest the spirit, or spirits, of the day in the company of Harpo and Groucho Marx.
