Prosecutor: Area Man Arrested on Sexual Assault, Luring & Child Endangerment Charges

A Monmouth County man has been arrested and charged with attempted sexual assault, luring and endangering the welfare of a child and could face up to 15 years on prison, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced on Friday.

William McMahon, 64, of Keansburg, is charged with one count each of second-degree attempted sexual assault, second-degree luring or enticing child, third-degree attempted endangering the welfare of a child.

McMahon was arrested as a result of an undercover investigation conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Computer Crimes Unit and Monmouth County Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force that commenced in late July.

The case background …

An undercover detective, posing as a 14-year old boy, responded to an-online posting by McMahon seeking to have a “sleep over” with the child. During the course of further on-line discussions, McMahon made clear his interest in having sex with the juvenile.

On Aug. 3, McMahon traveled from his home in Keansburg to an indoor entertainment center in Freehold Township, where he believed he would meet the 14-year-old boy to further his plan to sexually assault the minor.

McMahon was found outside the venue and subsequently arrested by officers from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and U.S. Bureau of Homeland Security.

If convicted of second-degree attempted sexual assault and luring charges, McMahon faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in New Jersey state prison, Megan’s Law, and parole supervision for life. If convicted of the third-degree endangering charge, McMahon will face a maximum sentence of five years in state prison.

McMahon remains incarcerated in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold since his arrest. He is scheduled to have a detention hearing on Aug. 9 in front of Monmouth County Superior Court Judge James J. McGann at 9 a.m.

Prosecutor: Authorities Seek Help in Finding Alleged Dog Abuser

From the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office …

The Prosecutor’s Office and the Monmouth County SPCA are seeking the public’s help in a potential animal cruelty case.

At approximately 6:15 a.m. on Monday, a Highlands resident was walking their dog in Veterans Memorial Park on Bay Avenue when the dog was alerted by something on the water side of the rock bulkhead.

As the passerby investigated, a black wire cage with a small dog cowering inside was spotted. The cage was on a small portion of sand between the bulkhead and the water. The tide was coming in and the water had reached the cage.

The good Samaritan, a woman who put her own dog’s collar (with tags) on to rescue the dog, climbed over the wall and rescued the dog from the rising tide in the Shrewsbury River.

The dog was taken to the Highlands Police Department where animal control was called and the Prosecutor’s Office was alerted. When animal control arrived on the scene, the empty cage was almost covered by the rising tide. If not for the heroic rescue act of the good Samaritan, the dog could have drowned.

Due to the tide schedule, it is estimated that that the dog was placed there between 4 and 6 a.m.. The dog is a roughly one year old male gray and white pit bull.

Anyone who has any information on who owns this dog or may have witnessed anything please notify the MCPO Animal Cruelty Hot Line 877-898-7297 or notify the Highlands Police Department at 732-872-1224.

*Update: According to social media posts, the good Samaritan wants to adopt the dog.*
