Batter up! There would have been both varsity and junior varsity baseball games at RFH today had there been a baseball season. Now, though, the RFH games against Holmdel have a black line through them on the high school’s athletic schedule.
For the first time in RFH history, the season has been struck out by a pandemic fastball. Players may be antsy and all suited up with nowhere to go in quarantine, but bases are loaded with too much health risk to think about the game — except in the recesses of memories.
In those recesses are thoughts of hitting and running the bases, not a foul ball of bad times to be had.
So, the Retro Pic of the (George) Day brings us back to those times with RFH guys dressed up in very different uniforms of the 1970s era and plenty of places to go on the field.
In these photos, the guys appear to have had a social distancing premonition. But are they six feet apart? Hmmmm … The spectators are fenced off and far enough away, yet sitting close to bond over the cheering for the team. Parents and classmates in ballgame attendance have always had their own brand of cheering. Parents have been known to get carried away. Your most embarrassing parent heckling or, ahem, cheering memory?
Just who are these guys and what was going on in this game? Anyone remember why the fence was up?
Cheers to RFH baseball of bygone years and a home run for a pandemic-free season to come!
Thanks forevermore to the incredible George Day for these snapshots back in RFH time!
