He flies through the air with the greatest of ease … You’ve heard that circus song before, right? It seems fitting here. School’s in and gymnastics season has taken flight at RFH.
It’s only been a few years since gymnastics made a comeback at the high school — the 2018 school year, to be exact. But, unlike the very popular program that in the 1970s had both boys and girls teams flush with enthusiasts for the sport, interest had waned over the years, making it nonexistent at RFH for quite a while.
Now, the team full of girls has catapulted to success, but there’s not a boy on the team, nor a boys’ team. The interest just wasn’t there. But, things were different back in the day. It was considered quite cool to be a boy gymnast.
The Retro Pic(s) of the (George) Day takes us back to the 1970s and some boy gymnasts competing — or pretty much taking off with the skill of the sport. Literally. The featured photo is RFH Class of ’78 guy Frank Henry vaulting — no horsing around. Kids, don’t try this at home. Seriously. The guy is airborne without a care.
And below is Phil Andrews, yes, horsing around. On the horse. Something like that.
These guys were fit and flying. Remember boys gymnastics at RFH? Your favorite event to watch?
